we're staying in west bay the first week of feb and on our second day there will be three cruise ships in roatan and we are hoping to avoid the crowds.

we like snorkelling, nature, moderate treks, secluded beaches, and are willing to do short boat trips(one member gets sea sick).

any suggestions?

can you recommend a driver whose fun and reliable. i've heard good things about juan carlos rodriguez.

thanks

I'd pack a picnic lunch and grab a cab to the Carambola Reserve, 2 or 3 miles east of West End in the Sandy Bay area. There's a small fee to walk around the beautiful gardens, some interesting structures with hammocks, and miles of trails through indigenous forest to the top where you'll have some nice views. It would be easy to enjoy hours there, especially if you pack a lunch. Also, you could wander down the residential streets and along the beach and maybe down to Anthony's Key Resort to check out the museum. We rented a little house in Sandy Bay for a few weeks in 2006 and enjoyed the neighborhood. Although from a coral/sponge standpoint there's not much to see, the fish life for snorkeling was fantastic and you won't find cruise shippers there. Good luck and keep us posted!

if you and you friends have any desire to see the rest of the island, rent a car, hit a few off the beaten path beaches, have lunch at The View or if your sea sick person can deal take a trip to Cayos Cochinos.

I would head to the East End that day - Find yourself a taxi driver you like while you're there, or ask at your hotel or another local business for one. as #2 says - have lunch at The View (great place, both food and of course, the view) or head down to Punta Gorda (nice ramshackle local restaurant there right on the beach - very chilled).
