Hotel Olas del Mar used to be called Hotel Catracho until about a year or so ago. It's located at the end of Avenida 14 de Julio right near the municipal beach. The beach there is not nice -- dirty water and lots of unsavory types walking around during the night. It is located near the Zona Viva however, so good night life is close by. I've never been inside the rooms so I don't know how they are. Two new hotels with nice rooms that are also near that location are Hotel Los Fuentes and Hotel Costa Dorada.

I am looking for hotel in July...doesn't have to be near nightlife but near good restaurants. The Paris quoted me over $60 but I am looking to stay around $35. We are a family of four with two kids. Any ideas for hotels? Any ideas on how to get in touch with any of them to reserve? A few have email and the phone connections seem to be poor...faxes don't even get through.

My only suggestion there is that I have spent a ridiculous amount of hours researching hotels and how to get in touch...and what I have found is that many of the hotels that are easily contactable may not be the best bet. However, even after the earlier guy's response...I did look at HotelOlasdelMar.com and it definitely seems to be a good deal for the money (35 a night for double). You can reserve through their website. I was tempted with Coco Pando...but after reading through the recent tripadvisor reviews...I was scared off...they have received all negative reviews in the past few months...and they don't offer comp shuttle service anymore...so you're looking at at least a nights stay worth of cash to pay for a taxi to get there. Hotel Canadien (Sambo Creek)--www.hotelcanadien.com is 35 a night...but it isn't in the city center. There are a few restaurants around though...and I have heard mixed reviews about their owners. Villa Helens--www.villahelens.com seems like a great place for family...in Sambo Creek also near Hotel Canadien--within your budget. Lastly I hear pretty good things about Hotel Iberia (in the city center) for that price range...but this is the only ifno I can find on them: Phone: 504 443 0401 Depending on how long your staying....what I am doing is booking my first two nights at Hotel Olas del Mar, so I can have a couple of days to get situated and figure the area out, and then will be transferring to another hotel afterwards...there are a lot more hotel options than are searchable on the internet...or contactable...and most of them you can just walk in and stay...but would definitely recommend booking at least a night somewhere for when you get in, especially if you're getting in late...that way you have a destination in mind once you get out of the airport. As far as other hotels...well they're either way too expensive, or haven't gotten good reviews from anyone I have spoken with. Definitely don't stay at the Partenon (notorious for prostitutes). Try those...Hotel Olas del Mar really doesn't seem too bad...and there are definitely restaurants around...plus not that far from the center.

Thanks for the suggestions...we are only spending 3 nights. If we get a place that is even halfway decent we can live with it for that short time and we will be out on tours in the day anyway. Any ideas how far Sambo Creek is from the City Centre?

I stayed for a week at Olas del Mar in January and was happy with my choice. It is situated right on the edge of the main part of town and also right on the edge of La Zona Viva if clubbing is your thing. Management was professional and very helpful. The rooms were not fancy but had clean showers and a TV. I found the hotel to be a nice launching pad for various adventures. It is very close to the Garifuna Tours office. The only other hotel I saw that seemed worthwhile was I think called Hotel Gran Ceiba. It is located right in the center of the commercial district and had slightly more upscale rooms that were a bit pricier. I'm sure you will be fine at the Olas del Mar. If you want to try something really unique, check out Omega Lodge for a night or two. It is located next to Pico Bonito in a lush jungle setting.
