anyone willing to compare Honduras to Mexico, in terms of culture, people, friendliness, potential for budget retirement...thanks, Phil

The size of Mexico means it has the sort of regionality, variety and choice that you won't find in Honduras. (Although its fair to say that many Mexicans are no great lover of the Gringo and they certainly make you jump through the hoops if you want to live there!). Everything in Mexico is magnified compared to little Honduras but the political unrest and crushing poverty for average Hondurans would certainly put it in a 'higher risk' retirement category!

Well, I've traveled all over Mexico over the last 30 years, and recently it seems that gringoes are less welcome than in the past and cost are going up. Mostly, I'm looking for a somewhat safe and peaceful place to hang out for 4-5 months at a time. I like eating the local food and blending in when possible. Some socializing would be nice...and decent beaches are a plus for the winter...and then maybe hop down to Colombia for part of the year...any more thoughts/ Phil

Honduras obviously has world class diving and island resorts but they don't come cheap and are really more for short term vacations. Not really known for the specialty of its cuisine (rather like most of CA), what makes you focus on Honduras over some of its more 'appealing' neighbors?

Appealing neighbors?

I look upon Central America as what Mexico was back in the 70's or 80's, much more attractive. I, too, have been all over Mexico and I've weaned myself away from that country, save Tijuana. Increasingly,I want to travel places where there are the fewer Americans the better. Surprisingly, El Salvaodor has emerged as my favorite country in CA. Have made 3 trips there the past 5 years. It's paradise to me as it's the least touristed country down there and incredibly friendly, nice, honest people.

Honduras and Nicaragua follow El Salvador as my favorites.

As you know, food is now on a par with oil, you'll find the same prices in grocery stores everywhere you travel today. It's shocking to walk into a grocery store down there and find the prices as high, if not higher than back in the U.S. Even in South America.

Have never been to Costa Rica and have no desire to visit there until I read that the last American has departed. I don't travel anywhere to be around Americans.

I'm not a beach person and I abhor high humidity. So I can't speak of beach communities, no advice there, as I stick to the higher altitude areas of Central America. But from what I've seen of Honduras, I've enjoyed tremendously: Santa Rosa de Copan, Gracias, Danli, Comayagua, and Tegucigalpa, which is my favorite Central American big city. Beautiful, beautiful city!

5 trips to Central America and I have no negative reports to offer. I actually feel safer and more welcome there than Americanized Mexico.

Tegus I think the worst city in my life. I spent so much time there, mostly in Comayagüela.
The hillside is okay, but the center and the market is the worst travel experience in my life. Everybody want rob you and the people are agressive.

Compare Mexico and Honduras is hard.

The beaches around Tulum are more beautiful in Mexico than in Honduras. But Honduras is so much cheaper.

After you've been to Tikal or Palenque, copán won't be so impressive. That's okay but small. You won't see any real Mayan culture in Honduras, in Chiapas yes.

But if you want to escape from the world, La Moskitia is the best choice in Central America. You won't see jungle tribes in Mexico, but in Honduras yes.

What is more recommended? For me Honduras!!!

I love Honduras. And i agree that small town Honduran life is one of my favorite experiences of all my travels. The only really good food there in garifuna food, tapado, sopa de caracol, etc. But Hondurans themselves are just the best!
