Honduras, how I miss you already. I got back from a 12 day vacation about a week ago.

I landed in SPS and made my way out to Copan via Casasola Express (110 lempiras). I spent 2 nights in Copan and then double backed to Utila (Hedman Alas, $31 full cama). I didn't know about it prior to the trip but I happened to catch Sunjam, the annual rave/techno party in Utila. After diving (Utila Dive Center, stayed at Cross Creek) and exploring Utila for about a week, I headed out to La Ceiba for white water rafting (Jungle River Lodge). There I spent a night at the lodge and the next day made my way to Roatan. I stayed at Valerie's (really as run down as they say in LP) for a couple of nights and flew back home.

There's a big backpacker scene in Central America and if that's what you're looking for, you're bound to find it in Honduras, especially Utila. Copan Ruins were pretty cool although you don't need more than a day. The diving is great, some of the cheapest in the world although personally I thought Thailand was better. La Ceiba is a shithole and I wouldn't recommend staying there but the night at the Jungle River Lodge was one of my favorites.

There's a lot of discussion of Roatan vs. Utila and it truly depends on what you're looking for. Utila there's literally no beaches. Big party scene, younger crowd. Roatan is a lot more chilled (Sat. night was fairly mellow, Sun. night was dead) but had the beaches that you could actually lie on.

Only things that were annoying were the sand flies/mosquitoes. They ate me alive despite me packing 25% DEET. The inescapable heat and humidity can also get to you but you kind of go in knowing that. I didn't experience any crime or felt threatened any time, probably because I stayed out of big cities like SPS and Tegus. People in general were very helpful, many spoke English (nearly everyone on the islands) and the food was excellent (balliadas anyone?).

Transportation is very solid in Honduras. Very easy to get around and there are nicely paved roads, reliable bus systems and the ferries are top notch. Overall very satisfied.

Thanks for posting - I'll look forward to checking out your blog as time allows. I recently reserved flights for next summer's visit to Guatemala (pretty much annual for me) and Honduras (haven't been since 2008) - looking forward!

PS There actually are beaches to enjoy on Utila, they're just way tougher to find and to get to than on Roatan.

I'm doing a little research for my daughter who is volunteering outside of P. Cortes. She would like to take an open water diving course next week on Utila. She's considering Utila Water Sports and Utila Dive Center. What do you think of Utila Dive Center? Why did you choose to stay at Cross Creek as opposed to Mango Inn? Is that listed rate on their web site ($299 including dorm lodging) reasonable? Any advice I could pass on to her?
Thanks.

She won't have trouble finding a dive shop offering a course when she's there. The shops each have a different "feel" and I was happy to walk around a bit and pick one. In 2006 I picked Utila Dive Center and actually wasn't very happy there. My original instructor (Advanced OW) ignored important safety rules; I requested a switch and had an different instructor (better) to myself which worked well. It's a crazy busy shop, even in the off season (I was there in the summer) and I didn't like the crowds and how hard it was to find room on the boats for fun dives.

We stayed on Utila again in 2008 and I chose Alton's Diver Shop and absolutely loved it - much more laid back and friendly, not as crowded, better location for me (we like to stay closer to the old airport end of town where it's a bit quieter, closer to good snorkeling and fishing and our favorite restaurant, RJ's). I had a great experience there and was impressed by the way they organized their groups and the instruction I witnessed.

$299 is a good price, pretty standard for the island, I think. The Alton's website lists that price for OW and it includes lodging and breakfast. Hope you get to visit some day!!

Thanks Hopefulist. She's only been there in country since the end of July. And she has a tight schedule. On Tuesday, she'll bus from Puerto Cortes to SPS, then bus on to La Ceibo, then take that 4pm ferry to Utila. She'd prefer to have things arranged in advance, because she'd like to take the course Wed - Sat, then make that return trip on Sunday...back in the classroom on Monday. Any other suggestions for her? Do you think that transportation plan is doable? I'll email her your post.
Thanks again, and yes, I hope to go there too someday!!

With such a tight time frame, I'd book ahead, too. I've never been tempted to stay right at a dive shop but in her case I'd probably do that, too. I can't help much with the transportation piece - hopefully someone else will pipe up about that; I've never taken a bus from PC to SPS so don't know the distance or with what regularity buses run that route. It's 3 hours from SPS to La Ceiba plus time to taxi to the dock. Sometimes the boats fill but I'm not sure how often that happens. I wouldn't cut it too close, though. Hope things go smoothly for her. If she enjoys Utila even half as much as we have, she's in for a treat!

I stayed at Cross Creek because the Mango Inn was full at the time. In hindsight, we lucked out. The Mango Inn is located off the main road and is quite the walk from the UDC dive center. The rooms that you get with the dive course are incredibly cramped as well, think a tiny room with 2 bunk beds and a fan. At Cross Creek, 3 of us shared a big AC room (2 beds) for $5/each per night. Not to mention, it was 5 minutes away from the dive center.

I had a great experience with UDC but I was doing fun dives as opposed to actual classes. The group of people I was hanging out with did their OW at Underwater Vision and they had a great experience with some awesome instructors.

Really, it's down to the individual dive instructors as all the prices are pretty much the same. She's on a tight schedule but it really helps to go and meet with the shops. But with UDC, Underwater, Alton's, you can't really go wrong.
