Sorry for the repost - I put this in the general CA thread instead of Honduras.

I'm going to apologize ahead of time because I imagine I'm going to have a few questions over the next few days. Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and insight.

Can anyone recommend a guidebook? I know we're on the LP message board....but the only Amazon reviews of the Honduras & Bay Islands book are from an older version and they aren't very positive. The Moon book was mentioned. I want as much current info as possible on the Bay Islands basically. Anyone have a preference or something good to say about the LP book?

I avoid the LP Honduras for a variety of reasons - Moon Handbook is good. My recommendations from 3 trips to Honduras including Utila, Roatán, and Guanaja are with the photos below.

I have always carried both LP and Moon with me since they have been available. I think they complement each other nicely. I have always taken the latest version so I have the entire collection in my closet :-). I also have every other guidebook published on Honduras but these 2 are the only ones I take with me now, the others are useless.

I'm not a total cheapskate......but I'm only going to be there for like 4.5 days. I'm mainly concerned with Roatan and Utila and knowing where to stay, where to dive, and what to do. I'd rather not buy two books. I'm leaving towards Moon -- if you have to pick one, would that be what you say, markmo? I've always gone LP in the past......but I want to make sure I get the most bang for the buck, here . . . .

I'd avoid the LP, it was poorly updated (imo), is nearly 2 years older than the new Moon, costs more and has a photo of a maltreated iguana on the cover.

Glad you're using my resources; let me know if I can answer specific questions.

Got it. There is actually a 2010 LP, but I'm sold on Moon. Going to order it from Amazon in a moment. Thanks!

You're right - the new LP has been listed as coming out in February but amazon.com has it now. The new cover is a HUGE improvement but I still trust Moon more.

Recently I purchaed a Footprint Guide and was really impressed with it. They're very small and light but seem to be loaded with info. They also promote Eco tourism and leaving a small "Footprint". :) Hence the name I guess.

I'm never satisfied with any one guide... but also like to travel light and hate to carry more than one guide.

For Roatan, I went to the library, got all of them + Fodors... took them home and scanned the parts I wanted, put them on my laptop and on a memory stick... printed key info I wanted to have at hand... this trip I'll carry the laptop, but in other locales I just carry the memory stick plus one guidebook - quick access to the others.
