Hi there,

Any advice much appreciated. I just am trying to find out if you can get a boat from Southern Belize or Guatemala to the Bay Islands in Honduras? How often they go and how expensive. If not what the best route is across from Northern Guatemala.

Thank you, any help much appreciated!

I think I can help with the getting out of Belize part of the trip.

There are 2 water taxis from Belize to Puerto Cortes, Honduras; one from Dangriga, and one from Placencia. I'd say the best option would be the one from Dangriga so you avoid the bus trip from Dangriga to Placencia. Both are once a week. There are also water taxis from Punta Gorda to Puerto Barrios in Guatemala.

Here are more details...

  1. Water Taxi from Dangriga to Puerto Cortes
The “Nesymein Neydy” departs from Dangriga on Saturdays. Passengers should be at the dock at 8:30 a.m. for immigration processing. The boat departs about 11:00 am. Arrives at Puerto Cortes about 1:30 pm.
Cost: US$55.00 each way (plus any exit fees).

Information and tickets can be obtained from Mundo Maya Travel, inside the Water Taxi Terminal on North Front Street near the Swing Bridge, Belize City.

  1. Water Taxi from Placencia to Puerto Cortes
The “D-Express” departs from the dock by the Shell gas station on Fridays at 9:30 am. There is a stop at Big Creek. Departure from Big Creek at 11:00 am.
Arrives at Puerto Cortes, Honduras about 2:00 p.m.
Cost: BZ$110.00 (US$55.00) plus any exit fees.

Tickets available at the Placencia Tourism Center. Tel: 202-4506 or 523-4045. Email: placencia@btl.net

  2. Water Taxi to Puerto Barrios
Requeña’s Charter Service & Watertaxi operates a watertaxi, “Mariestela”, between Punta Gorda and Puerto Barrios.
Departs Punta Gorda 9:00 am daily from the Municipal pier near the Customs & Immigration Office.
    Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours.
    Cost: BZ$40.00 each way.
Tickets can be purchased in advance from Requeña’s office on Front Street (half a block north of the pier), or before departure from the Requena representative in front of the Customs/Immigration Office at the pier.

Contact: Requeña’s Charter Service & Watertaxi, 12 Front Street, Punta Gorda. Tel: (501) 722-2070. Email: watertaxi@btl.net

  1. Other water taxis:
    Pichilingo
Departs Puerto Barrios 10:00 am daily.
Departs Punta Gorda 2:00 pm daily.
Duration: 1 hour. Cost: BZ$50.00 each way (plus any exit fees).

Marisol
Departs Puerto Barrios 1:00 pm daily.
Departs Punta Gorda 4:00 pm daily.

There is no boat service from Belize direct to the Bay Islands. You'll have to do one of the options John discusses.

Another option would be to fly Maya Island Air from Belize City to San Pedro Sula and then hop on from there. For a short while there was a Maya Island flight to Roatan, but it was dropped earlier this year.

There is now a US$18.75 exit tax by sea from Belize, same as by land. The air exit tax is US$39.25.
