is it best to fly into la ceiba? or to drive from san pedro sula? i've been looking at flights and it sure seems like a lot of stops, and i can't seem to find any that DONT go through san pedro sula? and the layover there is 90 min. how long would the drive take? we're flying from philly, and we already have to stop in miami. just hoping to find the most direct and quick way to get there.

thanks.

Is Roatan your final destination? If so, then look for a direct flight into Roatan.

From San Pedro Sula, would you take a taxi or bus or rental car? It's about a 4 hour trip from SPS to La Ceiba by bus. There are many, many bus lines that run this route.

There shouldn't be ANY stops on a flight from San Pedro Sula to La Ceiba....it's only about a 20 minute flight. Even with a 90 minute layover, you'll still be in La Ceiba well before you'd get there by renting a car, especially when you factor in picking up the car, figuring out where you're going etc.

You could also take a bus for a lot cheaper, but again the flight would be faster.

we do want to eventually go to roatan, but we'd like to explore la ceiba first, so we'd prefer not to fly directly to roatan. and we would be renting a car. to save time we'd like to avoid the buses. how long is the drive? would it be wise to have a car to explore the la ceiba area anyway? i think we'd probably be rather enjoying the scenery than sitting 90 minutes in an airport, but i guess it would depend on how much time it would really save us.

"would it be wise to have a car to explore the la ceiba area anyways?"

Hard to answer that question because you have provided very little information. How long will you be in Honduras/La Ceiba/Roatan? Are you going to visit other areas outside of La Ceiba and Roatan? What do you want to do and see? Are you travelling on a tight/moderate budget or don't really care about the cost? How much more is it to fly to La Ceiba than to go to San Pedro Sula?

it's not that much more to get to la ceiba, it's about $20 more pp to fly. we don't have exact plans yet. we are limited on time, so we'll have about 6 days total. we were told there are some fun things to do in la ceiba, but not sure if they're on the outskirts or not. we'd be interested in anything active (i.e. volcanoes, rafting, kayaking, wildlife, caves, etc.). we know we want to snorkel off roatan, so how much time we spend on the island, i guess depends on how much there is to do in la ceiba or outlying areas that we can get to easily. we know there is a school and maybe an orphanage near the town that we thought we would stop and visit also. i figured if we are going to need a car anyway, then perhaps we should rent it in sps and view the scenery on the drive to la ceiba instead of just seeing the inside of an airport for 2 hrs.

With only 6 days, I recommend you pick 1 or 2 spots, and no more. Either focus on La Ceiba & Roatan. Or just La Ceiba & the surrounding area (river/jungle/beach). Or just Roatan.

No volcanos nearby. Jungles, river trips (rafting, hiking, etc), wildlife spotting are near La Ceiba.

The ferry to Roatan runs 2 times a day. It takes about 2 hours (+/-) from La Ceiba. If weather is really rough -- it can be delayed or canceled (not often, but something to consider if you are tight on time).

If you rent a car, you'll have to leave it in La Ceiba -- you can't take it on the ferry to Roatan. Better to return it than to leave it in a lot that will get stolen.

Personally, I didn't like La Ceiba and don't think it's worth a visit -- but the surrounding area is (beaches/jungle/river/etc). Everyone is different though - so I'm sure you'll hear differing opinions!

All this is really simple. There are no direct flights from the U.S. to La Ceiba. You have to catch a bus or fly to La Ceiba from San Pedro Sula. It is about a three hour bus ride on Hedman Alas or a twenty-five minute flight on Islena, Atlantic, or Sosa. From La Ceiba, you can either fly on one of these airlines to Roatan or take the ferry. It's not that difficult. Have fun. Mike

you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows

Sounds like you really want to rent a car, and are just looking for someone to agree with you, and if that's the case then go for it...nothing wrong with taking in the scenery. But you asked what the most direct & quickest way was, and that's by plane. Have a good trip, no matter which route you choose.

Plane : 90 minute layover + 25 minute flight.

Car rental: Figure at least 30 minutes to get through immigration & pick up the car, 3-4 hours or so to get to La Ceiba.

On a side note, thanks for recommending Half Moon Bay Cabins/Resort, Mike. We had a great stay there!

I have often thought of flying into SPS, renting a car to drive to Cebia then catching the ferry to Roatan. I just wanna see the land between. I was on a bus once in bad weather when the flights were canceled from Houston. Could not see a damn thing cause of the cloud cover.

By the by ~ two weeks ago both the flights and the ferry were canceled for two full days. Wacky weather was that!

I have a friend right now trying to get to Roatan from SPS..the pilot (chartered plane) is saying he is happy to take off but they may end up in Cebia instead of here (Roatan) for the evening. Again, bad weather.

One must be all kinds of flexible when traveling down here.

I have flown direct from the states to Roatan, taken the ferry over to Cebia to hang about at Omega Lodge, rafting, hiking and kayaking. Good fun that.
