Has anyone done the drive through Honduras going up through Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, crossing into Guatemala at Corinto? Any thoughts on the drive and roads, and any recommendations on good stopping points or places to stay?

I've done the drive from both Nic and El Sal through Teguc/SPS/Ruinas and into Guat dozens of times. I have never met anyone who has driven from Corinto to Guat but that doesn't mean it can't be done.
The roads are fine. Where are you leaving from? Teguc to Ruinas can easily be done in one day.

If you just want to go from point A (Tegucigalpa) to point B (Guatemala City?) maybe you could go through El Salvador using the Panamerican highway (CA-1)

We took the Panamerican south, and now coming back up wanted to make a stopoff in the Bay Islands, then keep heading north through Guat to Belize and the Yucatan in Mexico. So we thought going into Guat through Corinto then through Rio Dulce and up to Flores that way would make the most sense. But can't tell at all how those roads will be, especially in Guatemala up in that area.
Chef, sounds like you've done this whole drive, but went further south and skipped Belize, right?! Went through Huehue and through San Cristobal. Guess that's our other option, but may just do this one blindly and head up the Carribean side anyway. Thanks for the input!

I have done both drives several times and both in the last year, but I have never gone through Corinto nor have I ever met anyone who has. It sounds like you are in Nica so here is the route I suggest depending on your time frame; Granada-Lago Yojoa-Ruinas-Flores-Belice. Cross the borders at Los Manos and El Florido. It is pretty straight forward but send me a PM if you want and I'll give you my email address if you have more???????

For anyone interested, we crossed by car from Honduras to Guatemala at Corinto, the border crossing the furthest north. If you´re driving a vehicle with Central American plates, it´s a really easy place to cross, very little traffic and no lines whatsoever for customs, vehicle inspection, etc. However, if you don´t have local plates, they won´t let you through until you go 20 km on into Guatemala to Puerto Barrios and pass inspection there - without your car! We have US plates, so I ended up waiting with the car while my boyfriend got a ride with a guy to the office to get the permit, which cost 40Q. There were no taxis around but this guy seemed to be waiting around for gringos in our situation, and he charged 150Q to take you there, help you get the permit and bring you back, all of which took an extra hour and a half. You could also try a bus, though it sounded like the office would have been difficult to find without a guide along. But if you plan in advance for that hiccup, it´s not a bad place to cross, and roads were great on both sides of the border.
