Budget beach accommodation
I'm planning to spend a few days on the coast/cayes of Belize next month on the way back to Guatemala from the Yucatan. My guidebook is really out of date with regard to accommodation and beachside development but because it covers the whole region I want to visit I'm keeping hold of it.

Can anyone advise me of some chilled out beaches with budget accom please? My ideal place to stay is a no-frills wooden cabana with a mozzie net rather than a hotel as I think they are cooler. I'm up for chilled places with fewer people rather than hordes of tourists, although I do appreciate its gonna be high season. Also will I need to book budget accom in advance?

Also, I know there are water taxis from Chetumal and Belize City but can you get them any further down the coast - are there any going to Puerto Barrios?

many thanks for your help
Eva

In Belize, Caye Caulker sounds like the place for you -- some beach & lots of budget accommodation.

In the southern part of Belize, there are water taxi services between the following places:
Dangriga -- Puerto Cortes, Honduras
Placencia -- Puerto Cortes, Honduras
Punta Gorda -- Puerto Barrios, Guatemala

You will find all the schedules and fares on the BelizeBus site:

not many tourists venture further south than caye caulker & belize city.

Placencia is a nice beach, and theres plenty of places to stay. theres also a 3 day sailing trip from caye caulker which friends did and said it was awesome.
