What is the best way to get from San Pedro Sula to Roatan? What are the approximate costs of the various options? Is there anything we should do or see before we head out to the Bay Islands?
if you don't want to spend to much and you'd like to check out the local scenery take a bus from the bus station. several companies leave to La Ceiba regularly and you can choose luxury or economy. when you get to La Ceiba the bus drops you off by the mall. Hotel Emperador is just across the street or if you take Hedmanalas, a couple of blocks away. $15-$20 a night. they have a shuttle you can take for a few bucks and drops you at the ferry, another $27. an hour and a half later your on the island. if it's your first time West End usually a tourists first stop, from there you rent your choice of vehicle, scooters are most economical. there is a lot to see. diving, fishing, canopy, mangrove forest, snorkeling and even deserted beaches. Geoffrey's Tropical Hideaway has nice cabins or a bunk beds for $15 a night. if you want to be away from the crowds, Marble Hill Farms has cabin and also a bunk room for $15 a night per person plus they offer diving, kite boarding, windsurfing and trips to the mangrove forest.
Easiest but most expensive to fly. In Honduras, I prefer Hedman Alas buses and have used the occasional private shuttle or taxi. We really enjoyed Omega Tours outside of La Ceiba for rafting, kayaking, hiking, horses, etc. plus a great setting and good food.
If you don't have a guidebook yet, I recommend the Moon Handbook for Honduras. Happy trails!
