I've booked a one way flight from Miami to San Pedro Sula with American Airlines but I was wondering will I be allowed to board the flight?

Im there for a year as Im doing voluntary work so didnt require a return ticket. I can provide evidence that I have funds to cover a return flight and show them paperwork that shows it is genuine voluntary placement. I can purchase a coach ticket to a neighbouring country-would any of this suffice?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You really need to call AA, explain your situation, and see what their policy is - as it's up to individual airlines to enforce requirements of different countries. And even if they tell you what you want to hear, call back and talk to another agent - at least 3/4 times to make sure they are on the same page. And considering it's MIA, there's still no guarantee things will be hassle free at check-in or the gate.

Please let us know what you find out. Best of wishes for your time in Honduras; in which part of the country will you be volunteering?

Its very simple- you are required to show "proof of onward travel" IF requested at check-in. All the calls beforehand will not change this, and IF you are asked and do not have it, you will have to buy a return ticket to be allowed to board.

totally ridiculous, but dem's da rules..

Boomer1- would a coach ticket to a neighbouring country constitute as 'onward travel'?

Ok finchyboy - I have just called AA and checked on their policies - based on my own potential future interests after just returning from Honduras and finding loads of teaching jobs.

There does have to be proof of onward travel to anywhere on any airline IF, as Boomer suggests, they ask for it. Since "booked" suggests you've already got the one-way ticket purchased, you do have some options based on however your organization has worked out your being in the country.

None of the schools I specifically spoke with in Copán Ruinas got official work Visas for their volunteers, whom remained covered under the 90-day CA-4 Tourist Visa. They said that holiday breaks, etc. always managed to fall right around the cut-off period and volunteers either returned home or went to Belize or Costa Rica before returning on another 90-day Visa.

Perhaps that can work into what ever necessary arrangements you'll need to make. Otherwise check Spirit, Delta, Taca, Copa or any other airline that flies in/out of SAP and buy the cheapest on-going fare you can find to anywhere. Otherwise you risk getting stuck last-minute at the AA counter - and the only place they can get you from SAP is back to MIA.

#4- yes, providing that you can show that you will leave the country within your visa period then you comply. The method of travel is not important, and it does NOT have to be a return air ticket (this is a common misconception)...

I thought you had to have a return ticket, or at least proof of onward travel - I booked with a travel agent (I'm Canadian, flying from Calgary to SAP), and she said that customs won't clear you unless you have either? The only reason I bought a return ticket was because of that info...couldn't find anything on it in the guidebooks...maybe I didn't do my research as thourough as I should have.

#8...you are right, but its not about customs. The carrying airline has the legal responsibility to ensure its passengers comply with the visa regs of the destination country.

#7- good luck with e-mailing AA....

I spoke to aa customer service and it is no clearer- they werent sure about having a coach ticket out of the CA-4 region to renew the visa would suffice as onoing travel.

Jose Kevo- it is a similar situation with my organisation- we will all be on cA-4 90 tourist visas and be leaving within the 90 day limit to countries outside the CA-4 region. The frustrating thing as well is that aa advised i will need a return to england from states as well but i havent booked this as im away for a year. i am considering purchasing a one way from new york or miami to england for next july now, but firstly im going to contact honduras and usa embassy to clarify facts
