Hello all. I'm planning to go to Guatemala for two weeks with my boyfriend in February. Reading about it online made me even more impatient, i just can't wait to be there! But to do so we absolutely have to book our flights right now (it's even a bit late i think..) Anyway, we're both students and don't have a big budget.. Do you know if a specific aerial company has cheaper flights than the others ? (for example VAP has mostly the cheapest flight from europe to brazil)

After reading a lot of…

I'm going to winter this year in one or the other. I've been to Oaxaca recently and know the drill.... but I haven't been to the lake in quite a while. Does anybody know if I can still get a no-frills place with a bed, equipped kitchen, hot water and internet for around $250-300 a month? Without climbing a mountain... or shraring a dorm? :) I'd appreciate any comments on the lake nowadays. Thanks.... Don

Hi fellow travelers,

I have a question concerning using my Maestro card in Antigua. We found a spot where we can withdrawl 2000 Quetzales but we were wondering if there is a place where you can get more in 1 transaction (and save on transaction fees). Much appreciated!

So, my husband wants to relax at a beach for at least three days. And I want to explore. We have only two weeks - it is a maximum vacation time we are able to take. Is this itinerary OK, or is it too much time consuming and we should focus only on Belize beaches with some short side trips?

arrive Guatemala City - go to Antigua
1. whole day around Antigua (not much interesting for me, but it is close to airport)
2. go to Nebaj, start trekking
3. trekking around Highlands
4.trekking
5. trekking
6. go…

HI, i may book a flight to Guatemala city that arrives at 8pm. Can anyone advise of a safe solution / place to stay without travelling alone at night. I would be travelling to Antigua asap but it would have to be the next day given the arrival time. What do folks generally do if their flight gets in at night as I understand its best to avoid Guatemala city.

I have travelled independently in backpacking Boliva / India et c before but many years ago and now I would like to relax too. Hello all. I am new to Thorn Tree, but have thoroughly appreciated the posts that currently exist. I have adjusted my itinerary already based on the very helpful information in other posts, but because my husband and I are traveling with an infant - and this is our first time visiting both Guatemala and Belize - I thought it was worth it to post my current planned itinerary and ask for feedback. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful advice!

We are flying in and out of Guatemala City. We are…

Fuego put on a magnificent display last night, shooting lava into the night sky for nearly three hours, creating rapidly moving rivers of lava, and large glowing lava balls running down the sides. Started about 7:30 or so. The weather gods held off the clouds and rain so they couldn't interfere with the visibility. We sat on the rooftop terrace with some wine and snacks and watched the show. That's the first time I've seen it shooting lava. Don't know all the volcano's habits, but I'm going to…
