I’m an British traveller heading to Guatemala for a couple of months.

In other countries (such as Ecuador which uses the US$) I’ve put a load of US$ on a Travelex multi currency cash passport.

But Guatemala uses the quetzal.

I hate carrying large amounts of cash around with me and I’m loath to use my UK bank card at the cash machines in Guatemala all the time and get stung with lots of nasty fees.

What is the best way to have acess to quetzals without:

I thought I'd post this here as I found it incredibly difficult to get information on the hike and because most of the stories are robbery ones so I thought I'd post a positive story.

I hiked between these two villages at Lake Atitlan in August 2014 with another girl. Wee took a lancha to Santa Cruz and then a tuk tuk to the village. We got out at the church and wandered around. Everyone was very friendly and we took lots of photos. Everyone we asked told us the trail started down at the…

Quick heads up for anyone planning to travel tomorrow, there are protests planned against the new GMO law that will be effectively tying up the Pan-American at Los Encuentros and other spots. Planned for 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. In theory it's going to be a one-off deal, but things have been heating up with regard to this subject (the law was fast-tracked during World Cup time and has wide-ranging effects on farmers throughout the country). More disruptions are likely, best to keep abreast of the…

Hello! I have wanted to experience Semana Santa in Antigua for a while now -- the spiritual connectivity, the brightly colored designs blanketing the streets, the community feeling. Anyway, I have off on Good Friday through the following week, but I am forbidden by my work contract to take any other days off before that. I want to be around to see the processions and I am wondering if I would miss too much of the celebration if I am arriving on Friday (maybe around 11am -- I am not able to…

Planning a surf trip to Guatemala / El Salvador for early 2015.

The plan is to fly one-way to Guatemala, eventually travel across the border to El Salvador and grab a return one way flight back home from San Salvador.

2 questions:

1.

I have flown one-way to Honduras years ago, and they wouldn't allow me to board the flight without proof of return travel. I had to pre-book a bus ticket to Nicaragua online and show the front desk the email before I could board. I know it's the same for…

One reason I am posting this review is because I found no information on this hotel when searching online. I initially heard of San Antonio Aguas Calientes after speaking with some of the walking street vendors in Antigua. Many told me they lived in San Antonio Aguas Calientes, a town about 30 minutes from Antigua by chicken bus which has a two story artesian market where you can watch women weaving. A couple vendors told me there was one hotel in San Antonio Aguas Calientes, but they did…

I stayed at some homestays this spring and summer (2014). It was definitely a learning experience for me. This review is based on things I think are important and/or what others have told me are important to them. One is in Jocotenango, two are in Antigua, and one is in Xela. I had stayed in Jocotenango before in the past. One reason why I stayed at the third one (second of the two in Antigua) was because of an extremely positive, over the top review posted on thorn tree and other forums--I…
