Me, my wife, and our 7 year old seasoned traveler will only have 7 days in Guatemela.
I do not want to spread us out too thin so I was thinking of 3 destinations, or maybe just 2.
Antigua, Lake Atitlan/Pana, . . . . and if a 3rd destination: either Xela/Quetzaltenango . . or . . Chichicatenango.
Interested in exposure to beauty of the environment, and exposure to Myan people and culture.

Also, please comment about if the big Thursday markets are something not to miss, or something to avoid.
And any other comments or ideas are welcome.
Big thanks and happy trails,
Geoffrey

I agree. Maybe play the Chichi market by ear, but the crowds can be really pressing and the combination of the time in the van and busy market doesn't sound like a dream date for a 7-year-old. There are lots of market options around Antigua and the lake that would provide a great cultural experience without the hassle.

Yes, I would also stick to Antigua and the lake. In Antigua there are so many great buildings and ruins to be seen. Apart from la Merced, Convento de las Capuchinas, San Francisco, the ruins of the Cathedral (just a few of my favourites) don't miss out on La Recoleccion, so impressive. Visit the general market. Consider volcano Pacaya if you have not been close to an active volcano before (it is not a difficult hike).

At the lake you can visit the villages by boat. Go to Santa Cruz and walk to Jaibalito. Great views and villages. Walk from Pana to Santa Catarina Palopo (or hop into a pick-up truck). More great views. In Santa Catarina walk up into the village. Take a boat to Santiago and go see Maximon, visit the weaving museum, see the church and the market. Good shopping in Pana. The nature reserve in Pana is great for a hike (and ziplining). In San Pedro go up the hill to the nice village center. You can consider hiking up Indian Nose.

As for Chichi. You can go by shuttle or bus. Yes, it gets crowded but it is a great experience. But why don't you try the market in Solola (Tuesdays and Fridays)? It is only a 15 minute bus ride from Pana (the bus will be crowded but it is very colourful and only a short ride). You won't see many tourists and the market is fascinating. Just seeing the Maya arrive in pick-up trucks is amazing. The market will be very crowded too (just keep moving) but it is enthralling. Have some snacks like banana bean balls ! And then just sit at the bus stop for some people watching.

Another vote for Antigua and a day in Chichi. Xela is cold and not that much to see or do as far as I am concerned. Antigua is wonderful with all kinds of places to vista. I love the Parque Central and the fountain. Plus all the old chutes that were destroyed by earth quakes. See wolf calls.com. I after many years haven't seen it all yet. chichi is another wonderful experience.

I agree with keeping it to Antigua and Pana (maybe with an afternoon of restaurants and museums in the capital if your schedule allows). The Solola market can be as rewarding as Chichi in many ways and is less touristy and less of a hassle to get to.

I do enjoy Xela, and it's really not that cold during the day (bright and breezy typically). It's also a very interesting city, but with 7 days it would be pushing it.

Consider staying anywhere other than Pana... San Pedro, Juan, Marcos, Santa Cruz, etc. It will give you a richer experience, and you can do your shopping and tourist trapping in Pana in a single afternoon (or maybe with a one night stay).
