According to my search of the forum it's a couple of years since this subject was up here so I'll have ago. I am planing trip to Guatemala etc to hang out but would also like to do some yoga and meditation. I've heard that San Marcos at Atitlan is a bit of a centre for these things, is that right? And in that case, what kind of places can I expect? Are there proper ashrams/retreats and how are they in comparison to if I went to do these things in India? How is the crowd that hang out at these places?

I've heard that the retreats are pricey, is that right? How much can it be? And if just taking separate yoga classes, hw much do they cost.

Grateful for all info and also tips/rewivs of specific places if someone have been to one lately!

Thanks.

Jon

There really is nothing else like SM when it comes to selection of ashrams, yoga places (at least 20), etc. Prices vary from luxury to budget. Xela is nice (I really like the city), but coming from far away for this type of activity, you'll probably want to be in a gloriously beautiful natural setting with lots of yogic food, accessory, etc. options all around.

Doubtful... you'll have better luck with Google. Yes, yoga involves eating or avoiding certain types of food.

Maybe you should go to San Marcos...

Sounds like #5 isn't too big on yoga and meditation... or ashrams. Not sure judging the OP on their interests is the right choice, though.

It should be said that San Pedro is a much better choice for getting wasted all day with young co-eds, that's for sure. There's certainly nothing in the traditional part of that town that doesn't exist in SM though, apart from the beautiful shorts.

San Marcos is a mecca for the yoga types, free spirits and born again somethings...

yogic food, goes hand in hand with the meditation, and balance of ones diet...my wife is a yoga nut, and a buddhist, and a Vegan...

Me, I like a good motorcycle ride for meditation, some beer and a cheeseburger :)

Your wife sounds pretty cool actually. At least you have an open mind about it! I have to admit that I don't connect to the crystal/barefoot/om culture in SM, but I'm glad that people have a chance to enjoy it if that's what floats their boat. It's a lovely town regardless, despite the major losses it has had along the shoreline due to rising water (like most other nearby towns).

I have been doing more Meditation thanks to her, it does relieve stress...the hard part about the Yoga is the instructors here in Chicago are young, and hot, hard to concentrate...I have 3 Yoga studios within 3 blocks of my house...

I should lay off the meat in the diet, but being raised in the Midwest that is a tricky proposition indeed...
