WAOUH what a surprise! but it's better than nothing...
would anyone has a marvelous idea on how to spend correctly that 1rst night in Guatemala, n not be stucked in the airport or close to it?

And also... is that horrible to travel this time of the year?

we are leaving on the 21th June till 14 July and we are planing to stop by Belize, any advice that could help us enjoy this trip is welcome.

Hard to give advice when you give so little info. Is your first stop Antigua? If so it isn't too late to get a taxi to there. Yes it is safe...everywhere. If you are staying in Guat. City then your options depend on how long and budget. Neither of which you state. Zone 10 has lots of nice hotels. Zone 1 a slew of cheapies. If you are flying out in the morning...Dos Lunas...at www.xelapages.com is cheap, close by and does pickups. Horrible to travel??? No why should it be?

your first week should be fine - then everyone gets out of school & high season (with higher prices & crowds) begin july.
but guess it all depends where you are going. the dude at a major tour place today in xela told me that to do the trips depending they must have 2 or 3 people & now some tours don´t, so they are not for sure, however in a couple of weeks he said they will all be booked up & people will be screaming.

if dos lunas is booked up due to a tour group try www.hhpedro.com or los volcanos both in zone 13 near airport.

next time list where you are flying in from & where you are going to then people can be more specific.

also fyi search the last month on this board -what you need may be here as it seems as if every month the same cycle of questions rotate thru.

I don't think there's ever a horrible time to come to Guatemala unless there's a particularly nasty hurricane, coup or some other political calamity. If it's your first time to Guatemala I recommend Antigua as a great bridge between exotic Guatemala and the familiarity of your home country. Like said above, it's not too late to get to Antigua which is less than an hour away by taxi and if you're alone you might also be able to meet someone at the airport back home, on the plane or in the airport in Guatemala to help ease and share that first thrill of being here. My older brother and I have both done this on numerous times in all parts of the world and have both made good long time friends this way. Depending on your budget you might be able to book a room in Antigua in advance to at least have that worry put aside or wing it as there should be plenty of rooms available there.

If you are planning to avoid the interesting sights in Guate City, the airport places listed are good enough. If considering your past trips, after arrival you both are also very likely to be ready for yet another hour's travel to Antigua, you might consider that option. Either way, a reservation is a good idea.

WHat a nice long trip - about 3 weeks. Perfect.

I would recommend: Antigua, Semuc Champey (catch a direct shuttle bus operated by El Retiro Lodge in Lanquin and Black Cat Hostel in Antigua), then up to Flores/Tikal. From there, you can easily cross over to Belize and go visit San Ignacio (hot hot hot!), the Cayes (i.e. Caye Caulker), then head south to Placencia. After that, you can take a bus to Punta Gorda then the ferry over to Livingston (back in Guatemala)

From Livingston, you can spend a night then take one of the many launcha/tours that goes through the canyons and rio dulce area. Stop for a night or two at Finca Tatin in the jungle. End up at Rio Dulce. From Rio Dulce, you can catch a bus back to Guatemala/Antigua (5 hours...) to return back home.

This is a nice circle. Maybe add a leg in the beginning/end to go visit Lake Atitlan or the northern Mayan highlands.

Hope this helps! Details and photos (and places to stay/eat) from our trip to Guatemala in February are on our travel journal if you are intersted. Scroll to the bottom of the page for links to other towns. Kay and Franks Trip to Guatemala

It sounds like that with just three weeks, you won't follow the advice to see Semuc Champey. Great. Good luck in the trip!
