Has anyone been to the Laguna de Lachua (with accent on final a)?

I sounds great and I'm considering checking it out.

Wildlife: is the forest around in good condition? i.e. not built on or farmed?
Did you see (or hear) many birds and maybe other cool wildlife whilst there.

Did you enjoy it?

About getting there, I'm considering coming down from the Tikal region, bit by bit as don't expect good bus links, over to Playa Grande. Any experience in doing that? Would it take more than 1.5 days travel?

Is the tour option from Coban (I think that's right?) very scheduled in large groups or actually quite a good experience and what did you pay to do it?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Or how else can you get there?

Ay! Parece preciosa.

Any views on the Laguna Petexbatun and the area round Sayaxché?

What's the journey like from Sayaxché to Laguna Lachuá? About 3 different buses I guessing? total of more than 7 hours with changes?

(Thanks Andres)

The good news is the Sayaxche rd south is paved, in good condition flat and very fast. You should have no probs getting to either Cruce del Pato junction in three hours or a little more to Raxruja (hotels and comedores here). Bad news is all the maps I've seen of this region are inaccurate (even the Rough Guide, which covers the area best) and the ITMB and INGUAT.

But there's definitely transport west to Playa Grande, you just may have to catch a couple of microbuses or pick-up.

I'd ask around in Sayaxche, or if you plan to visit Cancuén in Raxrujá.

Plan to go this way myself in February.

Here is a link to some maps of that area I posted for another thorn tree traveler.
Border area of Guatemala

I am interested in any feedback that I can get of the bus or colectivo (even passenger trucks) routes in this area to get to Playa Grande and on to Barrillas. I am also interested in any of the border crossings north into Mexico from Playa Grande. I can see them on Google Earth but am looking for first hand information.

Thanks for all help.

The best new map I have seen is the Intelimapas 2005-2006 Guatemala, published in Guatemala. Country map with roads based on the federal 2005 maps. also city maps of Guate, Antigua, Pana, Xela, Coban Flores, Tikal and Santa Elena. Well worth seeking out.

Neither this map and the ITMB have all the roads in Guatemala. they are building them so fast.
