Thanks to everyone for all the good information. My bank charges me $2.50 every time I get cash on my debit card, as well as the 2% that is the supposed Visa charge. This adds up to a lot as I live in Guatemala, and am not just on vacation.

When I began with Wachovia several years ago all of these services for a debit card were free. It looks as though I need to do some serious comparison shopping for a new bank card.

Thanks again.

My bank Bank of America charges me five dollars for the use of any ATM is a foreign country. My credit union gives me american Express travelers checks free and I have always had to pay a small fee for use of debit card or credit card for what is called international conversion fee. Ten years ago I didnt but now it apperas all the cards do this.

Ditto- my bank(huntington) started the 3% nonsense last year.
I ordered and have been using a Paypal Debit card that charges $1/transaction.
When my direct deposit goes to my bank, I just tranfer to PP. The bank is the big loser. Used to maintain a $2K balance, now it is $200. They do without $1800 for the idiocy!

patywolf, if you're looking to get an ATM card check with Capital One online banking to see what they have to offer you.

go to www.paypal.com and check it out. It's a great way to travel and pay if the establishment you're eating in or buying stuff from has and account and has an internet connection. It's been a lifesaver in my restaurant here in San Pedro as lots of times the ATMs don't have money and occasionally the country goes haywire and doesn't have any money to put into the machines.
