Hi there. Nowadays and since they built the Xetulul theme park in Retalhuleu, they have opened up all kinds of nice hotels/motels along the coastal highway (CA-2) at very reasonable rates. I was recently at one called Kakol Kiej in Mazatenango (exactly 160 kms from guatemala city) a real nice room with A/C and of course private bath for about US$17 single. For security and safety reasons I would recommend you to take only the pullman type buses out of Tapachula such as Galgos or Linea Dorada because chicken buses make stops along the route and that's when armed robberies happen. I know that some people will jump in right away saying that they have used them and they were OK. But to be honest with you when I travelled around guatemala I don't take any chances because of the kind of news I've read on line on the guatemalan newspapers. So, I'd recommend you for your own sake to rather spend a little bit more even if you're on a thight budget. Believe me the fare difference is not a whole lot. Good luck.

In case you have not found it before arriving into Guatemala City, the place where you can buy once in GC is any of the De Museo stores, in many shopping centers there is one. They are the cheapest dealers of LP I've found in Guatemala so far. Most other bookstore chains also have them. The new edition for Guatemala costs Q.180.00, I just bought it a few days ago.
