Hi:
My best freind is getting married. They want to do a honeymoon vacation to JAMACA but do not want to spend $3000. for the 7 day package. I suggested Guatemala since i have been there and think it is so very beautiful.
The end of March is the wedding. I am worried about Semana Santa and how crazy it gets!! Anyone know when that is?
So I am putting together the honeymoon vacation for them and I am looking for suggestions from you folks out there that know the area better than me. Destinations are:
ANTIGUA (2 days/ nights)
Lake ATITLAN (2 days / nights)
THE PACIFIC (maybe Monterrico)
Thanks a lot everyone. And so you know, this is not a backpacking trip. I know about the BLACK CAT HOSTEL in Antigua. I am looking for something more upscale and romantic.
Thanks for your help.

Semana Santa is Holy Week, and is the same time the world over, the week preceeding Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is the close of Semana Santa.
There are several excellent choices for lodging on the lake. Casa del Mundo and Posada Santiago are two. For two nights in Antigua maybe splurge on Casa Azul. Quinta de las Flores might be a good splurge choice for an Antigua posada. For a moderate priced room in Antigua it would be hard to beat Posada San Pedro (the one on the north side of town).

Semana Santa is March 30th to April 8th in 2008 with Good Friday falling on April 6th. Antigua will be very busy so book now if you can.
In Antigua there are some very nice romantic small inns, Casa Madeleine is a great B&B with a very good breakfast and they have spa treatments, Panza Verde is very nice and has a great restaurant, Posada del Angel has very romantic suites including one in which the Clinton's stayed, these are just 3 out of many options there.
My favorite small hotel in Panajachel is Rancho Grande Inn - the best pancakes ever, quaint on a quiet street but still close to the center of things or there's Posada Don Rodrigo right down by the lake more up market with thick stone walls and views over the lake... off around the lake there is Nimajay B&B or Tzam Poc, probably the two most upmarket places.
There's not much choice in Montericco but Utz Tzaba is probably the nicest.
Hope this helps,
Andrew

You're right Stacey, brain overload - was looking at 2007 dates and not 2008's which were in the next column...
14th to 23rd next year.
Cheers,
Andrew

Oh my god, you guys are really great!! this looks and sounds like wonderful wonderful information and I am so glad to hear that we are confindent that Easter is before all this honeymoon biz. That is great news as well. Thanks to all. You have been very helpful, now I will check the websites and convince my friends that Guatemala is the place to be...and that they need me to go and check all the hotels out before hand just to make sure....;)

We stayed at Casa Azul in Antigua for about $90 per night with a view of the Agua Volcano. It has a really nice courtyard with Spanish style rooms and architecture. Two fountains tastefully done. The breakfast is nice. Rooms have fireplaces, though we didn't need to use them. The best part is that the hotel is not on a major street and rooms are set way back in the property, so it's QUIET.
