Is it true that Guatemala is the sailfish capital of the world?
I was planning to go fishing in guatemala for at least one day, but I can't afford the price. I was thinking of Iztapa, close to puerto san jose.
I might go there, but just to look around.

Yeah..that's what they say. I guess you're talking about www.greatsailfishing.com. Now for fishing on the atlantic side check out an outfit called Las Sirenas at www.sailing-diving-guatemala.com. They offer a 3 night four day trip for $180US. Good luck.

I don't know whether they call it that because of the estimates of the fish population or what, but I do know that Isla Mujeres, Mexico would have a higher rate of catches because they have a tournament each Spring when many dozens of the very expensive sports fishermen's boats arrive from the USA to compete....we have been anchored there at Isla Mujeres, when they were coming in and it is an extravaganza in expensive deep sea fishing vessels. The sport has just gotten started in an organized way, recently on the Pacific coast here in Guatemala, largely due to the efforts of Dennis Wheeler who, together with his wife, also owns and operates Dona Luisa's Restaurant in Antigua.

Delmonte, Las Sirenas does not go fishing in the Atlantic. They have sailing trips, not sailfishing trips. The $180 trip does not even leave Rio Dulce/Lago de Isabal. They also have, on alternating weeks, a sailing trip into the bay outside Livingston into Belize waters.
