Hi Everyone! Once again I am off to Guatemala for some studying, volunteering, and this time some more exploring. Can you believe I was there for a month last year and never even saw Tikal? Crazy...

Anyway, I am planning to leave in November, and come back January 7th. My roomate is planning to meet up with me from December 22-January 5th. She can only stary that long because she is a teacher and only gets two weeks off.

I am trying to plan a trip for us during that last two weeks that will incorporate some relaxing, seeing new sights and having fun on Christmas and New Years since it will be the two of us. We are both easy going and like to see new things, but we also would like to go somewhere fun to celebrate New Years where we can dance and drink and have fun.

since I was going to be in Guatemala I was thinking to have her fly into Guatemala, go to Panajachel for Christmas, make our way up through Tikal and Flores, and spend New Years in Belize? Then fly out of Belize on the 5th. I know my roomate would like to spend a couplle of days on the beach, and we thought that maybe belize had some fun things going on for New Years?

Does anybody have any experience with spending the holidays in Guatemala or Belize? Or...is there somewhere else that would be really great for speding the holidays? We don't have the tickets booked yet, and I can basically fly wherever from Guatemala to meet her, we just want to get the most bang for our buck, and I want her to experience some of the things that I have had the chance to see so she will understand my love of Central America.

i think caye caulker, belize would be fun for new years. if it's loud night clubs you want then that's not the place to be but i bet the small caye would be a blast on new years.

My only Guatemala New Year's experience was after two days in by mule into the Peten Jungle, but we did arrange to have cold beer along. However, I have researched an upcoming Christmas trip to the Highlands. I have made sure to have our Christmas Eve and day hotel be one with a kitchen, so we don't have to look for what few if any restaurants that are open. That might be a consideration for you, but booking ahead would be a good idea.

The logistics of your trip sound quite good and well doable. My guess is that Placencia, Belize. would be a pleasant place for the New Year. Certainly things would be going on around town and the beach is long and nice, unlike Caulker's quasi-beach.

Have a great trip!
