I don't know where you got this quote. The chicken buses go pretty deep into Guatemala City, at least if you are coming from the direction of Antigua or Chimaltenango. (as of a couple months ago) The border of inner suburb Mixco is near the Pacific Oil building (Tikal Futura). I know this because sometimes I have taken chicken buses all the way into the capital to the end of the line, just to see where the final destination was. It was kind of anti climactic. There is nothing that special at the end of the line. However, if you are going somewhere like the airport or the Eiffel Tower replica, you will need to get off the chicken bus on Calzada Roosevelt or wherever and finish your trip another way.

Only some of the chicken bus lines are not running, according to what I read this morning. However, the ones that are not running (Orellana, Dorita, and a couple others) represent a significant portion of the chicken bus traffic between Antigua and Guatemala City.

I don't know about all your plans, but I am sure you can still get around. It just might take you longer. I read about one guy who went to Guatemala City the long way around by going from Antigua to Chimaltenango first. In other cases, pickup trucks or other vehicles are picking up some of the slack. However, if you ride chicken buses because you like chicken buses, then a pickup truck or other vehicle may not be very fun. Personally, I would enjoy the experience of being potentially caught up in some extra commotion, but everyone is different.

The quote came from the next thread doen from this one.

The chicken buses go from the Antigua bus terminal to Trebol in Guaemala.
I plan to cross the border tomorrow, perhaps as far as Huehue, where many chicken buses wait to take me to the city the next morning. Unless they are on strike or something.

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.
Why did I ride a chicken bus? same reason.

Each person should ride a van with 2 layers of people clinging onto the outside, at least once in their life.

Yes, there is currently a massive and unpredictable strike going on after a driver was killed by extortionists. Best to plan accordingly.
