Are there any tricks for getting cheaper fares? It looks like $240 on TAG is pretty much it. Traveling in February. Thanks!
I assume you mean round-trip at $240, is that correct?
Both TAG and Avianca have two flights daily, and each flight costs either ~$110 or ~$140, but the two airlines do their best to make the pricing as impenetrable as possible.
Just as a hypothetical illustration, let's say TAG has their morning flight FRS-GUA at $107 but going the other way the same morning costs $140. GUA-FRS would be $140 in the morning and then $107 in the evening.
Avianca's pricing is basically the reverse.
It's infuriating to navigate, but just run all the possible airline/direction/time combinations and you should be able to get down a little lower than $240.
@hopefulist reported that she's been able to save some money by booking through travel agents in Antigua, although I don't remember the details.
Finally, with TAG at least you can save 5% by paying in cash if you book in person, rather than by credit card.
Only cheaper option is traveling by bus....there is a decent night bus service. Even "first class "buses like Linea Dorada....

When comparing the two airlines on this route you might want to be mindful of baggage charges. TAG imposes an excess weight fee if your checked bag weighs over 20 pounds on this route. See http://tag.com.gt/baggage/ Avianca follows the usual international practice and imposes no extra charge provided your checked bag does not exceed 50 pounds.
Thanks for the tips! I searched all over the TAG site and they don't publish their baggage fees. Frustrating!
I've never had a baggage fee on TAG and have definitely lugged some heavy bags on that flight in my time...

The link in my prior post (number 3 in this string) is operating as of this morning. It says that TAGs maximum free checked baggage allowance is either one or two bags, with a combined weight of 35 pounds on international flights and 20 pounds on "national" flights. If you want to hope and pray that the gate agent is generous on the day you fly; great. Personally, I'd rather book on Avianca and save my prayers of intercession for something more important.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Saw the rules but couldn't find the fee. Prefer the TAG flight times. Maybe I'll just roll the dice.
