Seems all buses from Guatemala City to Antigua depart from places that are pretty far from the airport. Are their buses from the airport to any of these stops? Or should we take a taxi? Is that expensive? Or is it wise to just pay for a shuttle? If so, does that need to be prearranged, or can we find one from the airport? Thank you!

There are shuttles from the airport, just outside Baggage Claim to Antigua, leave when semi full, for $10PP, usually from first flight in morning to early evening...otherwise, a taxi ride is $25 ish depending on time of day and the driver...

Here's my take, reposted from a previous thread:

You can just walk out of the airport and choose someone who has "Antigua" on a sign; the cost will be $10 per person. You may have to wait a few minutes for the van to fill and a few minutes on the other end if others are dropped at their hotels/destinations in Antigua before you are. Be sure to have your hotel address handy; they'll say they know where it is to get your business but that hasn't always the case for me.

You can hire a taxi on the spot; cost might be $25-35, depending on your negotiating skills (shared, not per person). When I'm arriving at night I have my hotel - http://www.casa-cristina.com - arrange a shuttle for me, $30-35 for up to 3; many hotels will make arrangements for you and Spanish schools will, too. After a long trip it's kind of nice to exit the airport and see my name on a sign but I usually only do that if I'm arriving after dark or with a group in tow.

Here are 2 transportation providers I’ve been pleased with in Guatemala for share shuttles, private transfers, and flight arrangements:

If you are specifically interested in a private driver, Alfredo Garcia is bilingual, personable, prompt, and safe, and has nice vehicles: alf.transport@yahoo.com

All forms of transit from the airport should accept USD. If you arrive late and decide you'd rather sleep near the airport and head to Antigua in the morning, here are 2 recommended hotels just a couple of minutes from the airport that offer free airport shuttles as well as breakfast in the morning; the 1st is budget, the 2nd midrange, both great value:

The others give good advice.

If you really want to take a bus from the airport, you can walk straight out of the airport a little ways then walk to the street to your right where there is a bus stop for one of the red buses. If you ask any of the police or military in front of the airport, then can show you where it is. I would not recommend taking the red buses if you have more than a small carry on. The red buses are also much crazier than the chicken buses, so they are not for everyone. Anyway, you can get a red bus there and take it for a short ride of maybe three minutes until you get to an intersection where you see arches. The red buses have always cost me q1 but I have been told sometimes they charge double on weekends or whenever they are in the mood to charge more. The arches (los arcos) look like an old aqueduct but maybe they are just decoration. Then, walk across the same street you were just on and continue a couple hundred feet until there is a pedestrian overpass. Walk across the overpass and then down to the street level. You can take a second red bus from here towards Tikal Futura. Some of them go almost literally inside of Tikal Futura, in which case you will have to walk across Calzada Roosevelt on a pedestrian overpass from Tikal Futura to the chicken bus stop that is on street level. From here many chicken buses go to Antigua. Other red buses go across from Tikal Futura, in which case you can get off right at the chicken bus stop. I know some of the red buses go to Trebol, but the stop by Tikal Futura is better, in my opinion.

If you have much luggage, another option would be taking a taxi for q50 or so from the airport to the chicken bus stop across from Tikal Futura. The chicken bus to Antigua costs q10 from the chicken bus stop across the street from Tikal Futura.

Or you can arrange for a private pick up at the airport. Usually after a long flight it is just good to see someone with a sign with your name on it waiting for you. They then take your bag and you follow them to your transport. Remember while you are standing there trying to figure it all out many will bother you and try to take your bag so that you have to pay them. I have had to fight to keep my bag with me. You can always save money some where else on your trip. Photos of Antigua see wolf calls.com.
