Hi all,

5 friends and I are thinking of traveling to CR this spring, in late March. We're looking for beaches, wildlife, adventure, cultural experiences, and a smaller/less visited town- aka get us our of our comfort zones! Can anyone recommend any areas that would fit this description?

How long do you have to travel?
Sounds like the Caribe side to me, Tortuguero, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo.
If you like to raft the the Pacuare River is outstanding.
They'll drop you off back in town as part of the trip.

If you guys need a place to stay by the airport stay in Alajuela , a nice small town to stay for the night, 5-10mins. from the airport.

Caribe side 5-9 nights
Osa-Southern Zone 3-6 nights
Mountains 3-5 nights

Getting between them is very time consuming.

Hi there,

Both great answers. Cahuita is a very small, very chill town. Excellent National Park where entry fee is by donation so it doesn't cost $20.00 or more to enter. Great beaches in the park. I come & go several times a day. Just don't leave bags/backpacks unattended & be careful with food. Some of the animals are getting aggressive from people feeding them. Totally idiotic. (Good way to get your face torn off.)Also never step off of the trails, venomous snakes. But this is a beautiful place & if you act with respect, you have nothing to fear. Puerto Viejo is more party, party. The beach areas south of there are all really nice. Manzanillo is smaller than Cahuita. I always stay in Alejuela & just take the public bus into San Jose to catch my bus to Cahuita (about $1.50 compared to about $35.00 or more for taxi. But if you have a toms of bags or giant backpacks, bus is not so fun).

Enjoy your trip. safe travels.
