Greetings!
I will be travelling to Costa Rica late June/early July - first time, and I'll be solo. My plane lands in San Jose around 2 pm. With it being rainy season, is it more advisable to take the short flight on Sansa to Quepos... and then go to Dominical.... or take a shuttle from San Jose to Dominical? I believe the shuttle will be cheaper, and I may be able to see more of the country; however, if it's going to be rainy and the roads will be too bad, then the flight may be the better way to go?
And are the shuttles reliable? (I've seen easyridercr, com and supershuttlecr.com have reasonable rates of $55... much better than the $190 each way that the place I'm staying has offered....)

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

Additionally, I've been told about some local hot springs in the area. Is this a bad time of year to consider that? Is a dolphin/whale tour good this time of year? Thanks!

If you arrive at 2pm, then clear Immigration/customs, its now 3 pm. I am unaware of a shuttle service or a flight operating that late in the day to Quepos. Maybe a flight, check Sansa and Nature Air. Rainy season usually means delays for flights in the afternoon, due to weather.

You lodging must of quoted you for a shuttle, with a minimum of 4 people.

Otherwise, there is public bus service to Quepos, though not that late in day that would connect in Quepos. It gets dark at 6PM. The last bus from Quepos to Dominical is 7PM. Its a 30 minute ride about, many taxi hire...

The last bus to Quepos from San Jose is 3PM. That bus departs from downtown SJ, which is 45 to hour that time of day (rush hour) from SJO, or a $30 taxi ride for a bit faster maybe 30 minutes.

Here is a link to a lodge down in Playa Uvita, they list travel options.

We hired private transportation and really enjoyed that option. We enjoyed being able to have a cold one or two while someone else did the driving and we could enjoy the scenery instead of concentrating on the roads.

We hired Leo Rodriguez Arce. We would highly recommend him. Here's his contact information: Costa Rica #: 506.8378.0001 - E-mail: leratravelcr@yahoo.com. Here's his web site: http://www.drivercostarica.com/.

The company "Anywhere Costa Rica" (http://www.anywherecostarica.com) has transportation options available as well (shared, private, and buses).

Packing Tip: Pack DRAMAMINE for motion sickness <-- Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right? ;)
