Hi Everyone,

I am planning to go to Tortuguero in early to mid-August, and I would rather go with an organized trip than on my own (I admit that I'm intimidated by all the transfers - although I know it's probably easier than it sounds!). Normally I would arrange for something like this once I got to the country, but because it'll be peak turtle season, I figured I should try to arrange early. The first company I contacted is saying that the two lodges they work with are sold out for all of the dates that would work for me. Now I'm beginning to worry that is going to happen with everywhere I try! Do you think I'll have more luck if I just wait until I get to CR? Have you heard about this being a problem? Do you have any companies to recommend trying - ones that are easy to contact and reserve with from the US?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Happy travels!

Hi,

Like you admitted it's not that difficult to go on your own. Take the 9 am bus in San José to Cariari and you will be fine. Make a reservation with Casa Marbella or Miss Juni's and with Daryl (Casa Mmarbella) you can make/arrange all the guided tours you want to do.
Like you know it's the turtle season and a lot of individual travelers are going to Tortuguero too, so make as soon as possible a reservation with them to be sure to have a place available.

Have a nice time in Costa Rica!!

I can understand your frustration.

Check out this All Costa Rica Travel website. Call the 1-800 number and talk with Ray Hagist. He was from the US, and has lived in CR for many years. He is married to a tica doctor. Many ex-pats use his company when traveling or entertaining visiting family or friends. Ray can make just about anything happen in Costa Rica. Enjoy

Sold out in August? Wow...I find that hard to believe. Americans and their package tours! :-)

Elcolibri has a great suggestion. It's really not that difficult. Do you speak any Spanish?

If you don't want to take the bus/ferry, then you can fly. But the ferry is a beautiful ride.

Cheers,
Kay

If I were in your position, I would give Spin's advice a try.I've been visiting Costa Rica since the early eighties, but am not up to date as I dont live there...yet. I have used his recommendations a few times and I know that he wont "plug" a place unless he has experienced it, and knows things are legitamate and above par

Check out Parismina instead if you are interested in volunteering to do night turtle patrols. Just south of Tortuguero. You can stay with a family and arrange a trip into Tortuguero if you like. There are guides who will take you, it may cost up to $50/60pp but if you are lucky your family may take you for a much smaller fee.

Great organisation aiming to educate kids and encourage the local families to value the turtles for their tourist dollar not just meat and eggs.
