Your question is a tad general considering the huge variety that CR has to offer, although in a month you'll be able to sample plenty. Get a good guide book and aim to combine both coasts, beach action, national parks,cloud forests and volcanoes.
You haven't said when you are going, so take care to research the weather and suitable modes of transport.

I like the Orosi Valley and Tapanti National Park. Carate on the Osa Peninsula. Uvita and Ojochal area with the Ballena Marine National Park. Last, I like the drive from Buenas Aires down to Cortes. Note that none are on the tourist trail. Enjoy
