I have stayed at both Costa Rica Backpacker's and PangeaII in recent years. I prefer CR Backpackers probably because it is more light and airy. PangeaII is kinda dark and dismal but still a good place to meet other travelers (as is CRB). I have gone back to Pangea several times mainly because of its location within walking distance of the Caribe bus terminal and downtown shopping. I wouldn't rent a private room at Pangea however. Last year there were mushrooms or some sort of fungi growing on the exposed pipe at floor level.

I have also heard good things about Tranquillo and Gaudy's.

Gaudy's is in a quiet part of town, close to Sabana park.

Tranquillos is a nice locale, peaceful Barrio and safe area, close to main Avinda Central for shopping and nightlife, museums.

Tranqillo bp, Pangea 1 or 2. Pangea 2 and Tranquillo have the best social scene

I'd recommend Hostel Pangea and Tranquillo Backpackers as well.
