From what I've read, Costa Rica seems awfull expensive, there has to be somewhere affordable to stay ! Does anyone have reccomendations for budget hostels in Monteverde and Tamarindo ? We are 2 females looking for a private room with separate beds and private bathroom. Is it possible to stay with locals ? We don't mind 'roughing it' a bit, just want somewhere safe and clean to sleep and I would rather give my money to local people than some big hotel chain. Thanks for any replies.

There is definitely budget housing to be found.
Check your LP or Moon guidebooks.
In Tamarindo, there are a couple hostels. We stayed at a low-budget hotel on the beach. Private rooms and some private baths available. Cabinas Doly - $8-$13 per person per night.
In Monteverde, I really liked Sleepers Hostel. It is located on the same road as Tranquilo and Monteverde Backpackers Hostels. It is brand new, very clean, and has private baths and private rooms with hot water and a view. $5-$10 per person per night includes free interenet and a huge breakfast.
Cheers,
Kay

Hi there,
I have booked all my accommodation through www.hostelworld.com, basically just type in the city, how many night, how many guests and they will give you a range of options from hostel to hotels, most of the places i am staying in range from Euro 8-12 a night!!!
Cheers,
Foz

Backpacker "La Botella de Leche". Dormitory approx. $11, private room $22. They have one hostel in San Jose and one in Tamarindo.
www.labotelladeleche.com

You will also still find small hotels which are owned and run by locals. But these places you often don't find in the Internet.

Thanks to everyone who replied, especially Kay.
Boomer, I'm used to traveling in Africa and Asia.................rooms cost 5 dollars per night !...............Costa Rica looks godam exspensive !!!

You can not compare Costa Rica to SE Asia, or Africa, period, anymore than EU to Micronesia....
There are no hotel chains in Monteverde or Tamarindo (Best Western), 95% of the Inns and Lodges are owned by families, business people, and expats from the EU and North America.
You should not pick CR on a budget, Nicaragua is more inline with your budget, beaches are desolate and underdeveloped, CR has 1 million dollar homes going up like ATM machines....Inflation and the popularity of CR has increased the backpacker type places.
If you consult a guidebook, LP, Shoestring or Moon, there plenty of charming and comfy safe secure places in CR for $30 night, divided by 2 thats $15...if you cant handle that, then select another country.
