How real is the malaria threat in Guanacaste? I'll be travelling there with my 4 month old baby and we're behind on our chloroquine regimen. People laughed at me in Belize when I asked about malaria, and yet the CDC says both places are dangerous. I don't really want to give my tiny baby yucky medicine already. I don't want to make a stupid mistake either! While we're on the subject, what kind of repellent should I use on him? I have the all natural kind, but would you recommend something more hardcore?

We only have one week. I'd like to visit the beaches on the Nicoya Penninsula. What else should we do besides beaches? Since we are travelling with such a little baby our activity level has to be pretty mellow. Any good ideas? Turtles, volcanos, sloths.... they all sound good. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Hi, don't worry about the malaria is very uncommon the case of that there, if you want to enjoy beach and turtles Ostional is your option close to Nosara beach, Samara and another beatiful beaches and then go to the arenal volcano and hot springs(Tabacon Resont) i know that your little one going to like that. The natural repellent is ok, I have two boy, we travel to that places what i recommended you and nothing hopen, but ofcurse take all kind or cares.
enjoy your trip

The malaria risk is non- existent but you should be aware of Dengue fever which is starting to have a big year. No prevention other than not being bitten and this is a daytime mosquito rather than dusk. 'Off' repellants do a 'Family' version which is gentle on kids but really pretty good.

4 month old babies sleep a lot. I would get a mosquito net and use it.

There are freestanding mosquito tents but since you are already on the road.....
They are also good for keeping rodents off babies.

Hi,
Boomer is right, there is no malaria in Guanacaste. You need to care for denque, use a repellant and a mosquito net and you will be fine.

Have a nice time in Costa Rica!!
