Can anyone recommend a driver? There are tons of companies that want to charge $240 US to drive me to San Jose. I have an odd hour arrival so shuttles won't work and flights are sold out that day. If anyone knows of someone who can drive me to San Jose, I would be happy. I am willing to pay a decent rate. But $240 seems excessive.
They are charging you 4 hours time, and a lot of distance, and if at night, even more a issue, as driver may have to get hotel, most don't like to drive at night in CR/Region long distances, and thru the mountains and on the CA1 is no cake walk either, generally speaking, its not recommended to drive at night, period, other than to dinner...
Why are you flying into LIR if you have to be in SJ? Why can't you take a bus in the morning, they are direct at 6AM and cost under $10....
Liberia the town is a easy place o stay a night and safe too, plenty of places under $50 night and some good cafes/bars too.
What time do you arrive into Liberia?

My flight arrives at 3:15. I have to meet my scuba diving group in San Jose (going to Cocos). I like the idea of spending the night in Liberia and taking the bus. Could you please recommend a nice safe hotel please.
Maybe I am not looking in the right websites but I can't find cheaper transport leaving in the evening.
From what it sounds it's not an easy drive.
There is a 4PM bus but not sure you could make that after landing, clearing Immigration/Customs and then taxi 15 minutes from airport to bus station in Liberia...

Why are you meeting group in SJ for diving in Cocos, are they not driving group from SJ to the Boat somewhere in a Marina on Pacific coast near Tamarindo, Coco, Flamingo? If they are, they are going to be driving right thru Liberia to get to any of the places they would have a boat? Have them pick you up at the turn off, there is a Burger King and bunch of cafe/soda/tiendas/fast food places they most likely will stop for a stretch/drink on way....or even better, meet them at the town the boat is in, and get a hotel there, most likely it will be under 2 hours bus from Liberia...
Unless the boat is in Quepos? Then you should just meet them in Quepos, and take a bus there from Liberia, or shuttle...
Look into that...
Otherwise, check Expedia or Booking.com for a hotel in Liberia....the bus station is next to the Central market/Centro Mercado...on Google Map.
I would avoid going into San Jose if you don't have too...its crowded, congested and dirty compared to anywhere else in the entire country...

The group has a night at San Jose hotel a day after I arrive and then we leave from Punta arenas
Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it
Then just head to Puntarenas from Liberia, its about 3 hours via bus from Liberia. Puntarenas is a classic port town with a main little downtown area of seafood cafes, bars and hotels lining two main streets and a promenade along the beachfront, its old school and mainly Tico working class that picnic and hang out here, and tourist with cars that are taking the ferry to Tambor and beaches south...

There is a 3:30 and 5:00 Bus to Puntarenas direct, 3 hours....or stay in Liberia, heck even Tamarindo a night, then bus pack to Liberia 1.5 hours and get bus to Puntarenas (every 2 hours), for a 3 hour ride to Puntarenas...
You could also negotiate a taxi easier from Liberia to Puntarenas, figure $100 ish...a pirate taxi near bus terminal maybe $75...most taxi drivers speak english...wear your seat belt, sit in front seat, grab a few beers for the ride.
