yes you can get to cahuita same day but it is tight. exploradores will pick you up in san jose, you can run the river or do any of the other activities they offer and they will drop you off in arenal or puerto viejo when you are done. it's a nice way of getting around wtihout paying the travel costs that can add up when getting around CR. and the Pacuare is worth it. not just for the rapids because you can get that anywhere but nowhere can you find that beauty where you almost want to just coast down the river to stare at it instead of having to work to get down it safely. from puerto viejo, manzanillo or cajuita make great day trips (so you dont have to lug your stuff if you dont want to) they are only 45 minutes on either side of PV. here is a great spot in cahuita: http://www.hotelsunshine.net/

the owner pays attention to details and provides good service and grew up right there in town with the park his front yard when he was a child. they know the place and can give you history if you so desire.

Thanks for all the information. I am actually leaning more toward the Carribean side right now although I am not sure if the weather will affect this. As of now I think I am going to try to stay at Tranquilo Backpackers for the night and then figure out my next move from there. Thanks again for all the great advice. I'm sure whatever I do it will work itself out and I'll have a great time wherever I end up.
