Hi all,
I have a few last minute questions, if anyone could help? We arrive in Costa Rica in 2 weeks time :)

  1. What is the cheapest way to get from San Jose Airport to downtown San Jose?
  2. We plan on getting the bus/boat to Tortuguero the next morning (Sunday 20th). What time do we need to be at the station for to get to Tortuguero as soon as possible? Is Gran Terminal del Caribe the correct station?
  3. Is 'The Point' the best sports bar in Peurto Viejo area? Sorry not very cultural but wanting to catch the big boxing fight when we are there (McGregor-Mayweather).
  4. What is the best way to get from La Fortuna back to San Jose airport Sat AM (we need to be there for around midday)?
  5. What is the weather like at the minute and over the next few weeks in central and the caribe side? Trying to plan on what to pack (all the apps saying non stop rain and thunder/lightening)

Thanks :)
AJ

The public bus that leaves from in front of the airport. The bus company called TUASA. It should have a sign saying Aeropuerto, or San Jose, and that will take you to the center of San Jose right by the cathedral.

Yes, Grande caribe terminal, bus for Cariari. Buses leaving at 6:30, 9:00, 10:30, 13:00, 15:00, 16:30, 18:00, 19:00. Then you need another bus, and a boat to Tortuguero.

It is rainy season, and apps or weather sites designed for North American and European weather are really bad at describing tropical weather. But no it's not going to be raining all day and all night with thunderstorms. It usually involves sunny mornings and afternoon thunderstorms. Of course August/sept is hurricane season, so if luck is against you, a massive longlasting rain event is also possible.

Thanks mstep. Any help with the other questions? Or perhaps others can help? :)

For the TUASA bus, do you know how long it takes and whether it stops near the Parabús Barrio Luján station or near the National Theatre?

Thanks.

Hi Arronjohn

If there is no traffic the bus takes about an hour from the airport to the city. The bus terminal is near La Merced church or about 9 blocks from the National Theater (they are both in Avenida Segunda.
I agree with mstep about the weather, so far the heavy rains have stopped. Two weeks ago we did have long 3 or 4 hour rain spells. Now we are having intermitent rains but it is possible to go out and enjoy the outdoors.
Having no car I believe the best way to get form La Fortuna to the Airport is to take a shuttle (I have never done it) the other option is to take an early bus to San Jose but if I am not mistake then you would have to go to the airport so it might not be feasible in temr of time. That's what I can answer, I am not a fan of sportsbars.

Any bus coming from La Fortuna will stop at the airport on the way into San Jose city center. It's standard practice, and right on the way, so travelers don't need to go into the city.

The airport bus stop is behind the parking garage. Exit the airport, cross to the parking garage, go left and you will come to the street. Go right and you will see the bus stop. The bus should say San Jose but you can also ask the driver when you get on. You will pay the driver in colones (make sure you have small bills).

For Tortuguero:

La Fortuna to Alajuela: you may have to change buses in Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos).
