I used Lonely Planet travel guide and picked only ones that had web sites w/ pictures of the bedrooms. (Lesson learned from a previous trip to Peru!)
Suggest Cinco Hrmigas Rojas in San Jose, Casa Marbella in Tortugeuro and Cabanas El Castillo in El Castillo (Areanl area) for night lava views. Bungalows Calalu in Puerto Viejo de Talmanaca were clean and simple, but the owners are a bit grumpy.

You will probably find better weather on the Pacific side of the country during your travel dates. You will also be able to find rooms at reasonable rates if you avoid popular destinations for world travelers and vacationing Ticos.
I would choose a place like Uvita or Ojochal, South of Dominical. Far enough from San Jose that most Ticos won't go there. There are many new places springing up in this area, so Google "Costa Rica, Uvita" or ...
A guide book will be a great money saving investment. Ojochal has many French speaking peoples from Canada vacationing in this area during the our dry season or their white season (Brrrrrr).
The Osa is another possibility for a nice vacation spot. I like Cabinas Jimenez in Puerto Jimenez.
