I am travelling with my husband to Costa Rica for two weeks starting Dec 22nd. Does anyone know of a good website (or other useful resource) to locate cheap accomodations throughout Costa Rica?

Thanks

Lonely Planet Costa Rica book is really good. We used it for cheap hotels and it worked great.

The internet offers little info for the budget traveler in a developing country, get the LP Guidebook, or the MOON guidebook-

You are going at the most expensive, and crowded time, in the entire year, for CR. Not to mention, there are 2-3 night minimums for both Xmas and New Years. Many places are booked already, and beach venues will be jammed, with both tourist, and locals enjoying the holiday.

There are cheap rooms in most locals but nothing will be real cheap during that time period and your likely to find the places full without advance reservations.

If you told us where you were going maybe we could help.

the normal way during off season would be to turn up and start asking where can we get a cheap room?

not all hostels are the same...many are as good & sometimes better than the standard hotel in many respects

A cheap accommodation in Costa Rica is called "Cabinas" . Thats a room with bed , sometimes with own bathroom , sometimes with common bathroom. Normally you'll find a lot of this cabins on your way through Costa Rica, but you travel in the superhigh season and many locals have also holidays. It's highly recommended to have reservations for this time. Good luck.

As has been already said, you are coming during the most expensive and traveled weeks of the year. If you are coming through the Central pacific area near jaco I can maybe help with some recommendations. These weeks are not the easiest for budget travel, and the cheap accomodations do not have websites and they are not set up to even take reservations and collect a reservation deposit.

Where are you going? I'm happy to help if it's somewhere we have been since we,too, are budget travelers. We stayed in some pretty nice places for very little money and are planning another trip for the spring. As far as where did we find the info....well, guidebooks and the recommendations of the posters on this forum as well as "GOOGLE". Good luck and let me know if I can help!

Hostels aren't what they used to be. The guests easily have the best travel information too.
