We are driving from Sumara to montezuma tomorrow, I know the coastal road cannot be done as rivers are high but has anyone recently driven the road between samara and hojancha? I have been getting contradictory information, some people tell me the road is mostly paved, steep and curvy but great views. Other people here tell me it is mostly dirt and not very safe. Any input in the best driving route and whether a gps is really needed would be appreciated

Ask the nice folks at the Samara Info Center. You can call or visit them at their booth at Lo Que Hay. I'd rely on a good map over a GPS in that area. They can advise you on whether the "inland" road through Nicoya via Paquera is in good shape. That's how I've gone from Samara to Montezuma in the dry season, and it's the fastest way, plus it's quite scenic. The longer, surer option is to take the bridge, then the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera.

I advise you to go back to Nicoya, then over to Paquera, then down to Tambor, the last 1%KM is a single lane trail, unpaved. Then head to Cobano, and down to Montezuma. This should take you 4 hours max.

Going the back way, is hard even in dry season, its bumpy, dusty ranch country and the roads are unmarked, no signs, there are few villages, no gas stations and zero anything for miles in every direction, its 2nd gear most the way and its not scenic at all, its just country roads for farmers.

if ypou don't get lost or stuck crossing a river, its 5 hours.

If you get stuck in a river, walk to a farm and have him grab his bulls or horses and he can pull you out...your rental car insurance is null and void if any water damage or to the under carriage.
