DON'T drive at night!

On one of our drives in CR (main road, too) we came upon a spot where the bridge over a small stream just wasn't there. The only warning was a strip of that yellow "crime scene" tape. If we had been traveling at night it would have been a disaster. Luckily it was during the day so we had enough warning to stop and then drive down the bank, across the stream, and up the other side. Granted this isn't something you'll see every day. There were a lot of really large potholes on the road from SJ to La Fortuna. Have they been filled? Wouldn't want to hit one of them, either. As for getting lost, roads inthe towns and cities aren't always marked. We got turned around in Cartago on the way to Orosi and just had a heck of a time getting righted.

I would also recomend getting a GPS. We paid $ 8 a day. It was worth every penny and then a lot more. Some of the turns were into the small towns and things were not marked. It saved us a lot of headaches.

Because it's been raining so bad a portion of the road from Arenal to Guanacaste was closed. The GPS really saved us then.

I also would not recommend arriving at night to San Jose. Very dangerous.
