Looking forward to visiting Costa Rica! I've heard that Dengue is having a big year here and from friends. Is it on the Pacific cost as well as the Caribbean? Is it all over CR or just in isolated places?

Just came back from 3 weeks in CR. I went everywhere except Osa and Nosara area and there was no Dengue fever. I was even on the Caribbean as well. I wouldn't worry about it, just bring your bug repellant.

I'm the last person to scare-monger but those posts are somewhat at odds with official reports that show Dengue cases on the Pacific coast well up on last year (which was a bad year!). The reason you don't have to worry is that there is not a whole lot you can do other than prevent getting bitten. A good idea is to ask around. The Dengue mosquito does not travel far so endemic areas are often contained. Remember that it is a daytime mosquito so if there are reports of Dengue where you are then apply deet based repellants as soon as you get up. Use time-release sweat resistant varieties and they'll last all day.
You'll be fine.

I've had a look in the archivo de nacion.com . There are a lot of artikels last year, but not much for this year. May be it's not that big Dengue year.

We were in Costa Rica for 10 days up to 16th July. I saw a local paper (no idea which one) which was reporting over 8,000 cases in Guanacaste. I saw a later report on the internet that outbreaks had moved to the Caribbean and Pacific coast.

Cases are up about 30% this year, but you have to remember that because there is little treatment for basic Dengue that Ticos certainly often don't bother reporting it. Actually cases will be much higher. The ones that make the papers are hemorrhagic dengue which results from several infections and is much more serious.

I've had dengue twice, once in Sri Lanka and once here in Costa Rica some years ago. Boomer is right about the hemorragic dengue (DHF) - the mosquito that carries this feeds during the day so make sure to use good bug repellent when you go out (especially hiking in tropical areas). The DHF strain is very rare. If by chance anyone does catch Dengue, get as much fluid in you as you can. It will last about seven days and you'll be miserable with fever. Don't let any of this scare you - take precautions and you should be fine.
