Hello All,
I would like to solicit itinerary suggestions for a 9 day trip - first time - in early September. My wife and I are both fluent in Spanish and have considerable experience roughing it through Latin America. Main interests include nature (not partying) and beaches with good snorkling.
I was thinking about Tortuguero, Antonio Lopez, Monteverde, but am a bit hesitant given that many on this board have indicated that the Caribbean side is best in this season. Are these must see parks, or have they been overrun by tourism? If so, are there better alternatives?
Any insight, including budget-midrange hotel recommendations, would be appreciated.
Finally, what are the best transport options? Are buses efficient or do they stop every 15 minutes?
Thanks.

If nature is a priority then you have to start off in Corcovado. The problem is though you are in the heart of the rainy season and getting around Corcovado can be dicey. It is the gem of Costa Rica though when it comes to unspoiled nature and wildlife. Many on this forum call it a zoo without bars. Your best snorkeling is by far on the Caribbean side.
This is considered the low season so even though Monteverde sometimes is decribed as being over run with tourist, you probably would still enjoy it this time of year. I would definitely choose Corcavado over Monteverde though. If it's in the budget then take one of the domestic flights on Nature Air out of San Jose to get to Corcovado. otherwise it could be as much as a 10 hour drive each way.

Hi, is better to rent a car, think about Guanacasta area there are a good beaches and greet nature, Like National Park Las Baulas who is close to Conchal beach both are great places to visit.
Have a nice trip.

The best place to go is the caribbean, beautiful white sand beaches, great snorkeling, jungle, national parks and it is low season, you should check out our web site for more information.

treehouse, congrats on being the MOST boring spammer to ever post here!
OP, your itinerary is good but if you are going to Tortuguero, maybe skip Monteverde and visit the Caribbean where the weather is more likely to be better.
who can be definite about the weather any more??
Perhaps visit La Fortuna Arenal, lots of tours/activities in the area and easy to get to Tortuguero from there and then down to the Caribbean coast.
Check ouyt Almonds and Corals- muy romantico- and a beautiful Wildlife Reserve nearby!
Hi,
We suggest stay on the Caribean side of Costa Rica. A good place to stay is Casa Marbella of the Canadian biologist/guide Daryl in Tortuguero. In the southern area of Cahuita/Puerto Viejo/Manzanillo are more hotel options, we have good experience with Cabinas Tropical of the German biologist/guide Rolf. Visit the Gandoca park with them and you do have a wonderful trip.
Corcovado park is beautiful but probably very wet and a lot of places are closed in that period.
Have a nice time in Costa Rica!!
