Hey Folks,
Ive heard people are still doing this hike despite it being officially closed. Any tips/advice from anyone who has done the Cerro Chato hike in the wet season (June/July/August 2017) would be much appreciated. We have hiking books, rain gear, plenty of water etc, just sussing out conditions and if the closure is inforced. Cheers Ellie

We booked a tour (the two volcanoes hike), that was supposed to go up cerro chato. Unfortunately, its closed not due to it being the rainy season but because the area is becoming more active recently. The thermal vents underneath the lagoon on top of cerro chato are heating it, causing marine life to die. Its closed rught now for research and safety reasons. If you do decide to book the hike, they take you to a different green lagoon that you can swim in.<snip> Good luck!

We have friends who just came back from Costa Rica. They hiked up Cerro Chato in July. They said it was steep, very muddy and slippery. They loved the views but didn't make it to the top.

Cerro Chato is within a protected area along with the Arenal Volcano National Park. There is no trail system or facilities for visitors at Cerro Chato. The National System of Conservancy Areas known as SINAC announced a couple of months ago that access is closed to visitors.
