Hello,

My boyfriend and I leave for CR in 9 days. Despite everyone here saying it's too touristy, we've gone with the recommendations of our friends and are headed to Manuel Antonio for a portion. This is our only beach time on the trip. I love boats and have been trying to find a good boat tour, but haven't had much luck. We don't fish. On some website or another I thought I saw there was a boat trip to some islands but I can't find it anymore. Any help! I'd prefer to be on the open sea than in the mangroves. We will have a 4x4 and can drive to another nearby area if needed.

Second question is do we need any vaccinations? I work in medicine so i am up to date with Hepatitis and most others but saw the CDC recommended Americans to get Typhoid and Rabies as well. As far as my friends and family go, I don't think any have gotten them. Thoughts?

Thanks all! The advice on this page has been so helpful (even if I've ignored some of it).

You don't need Rabies.

Hep A-B
Typhoid/Dyptheria
Tetanus Booster

The only issues in rainy season, is Dengue, Zika and Chika, and there is no vaccine for those, and Dengue is usually the issue...

I am unaware of boat tours from Manual Antonio to anywhere. The marina at Quepos has a lot of commercial fishing and fishing charters. The area for tours, like Whale watching, is down in Playa Uvita, about 45 minutes drive south...they may go to Isla Cano for snorkel, buts its open ocean, the ranger stations on the islands are still closed..

Check with your lodging for tours/excursions and activities, MA is the first area serving tourism in the country, they have been arranging tours for guests for 4 decades.

I had the same thought....

But they didn't listen to the posters here about MA, and listened to friends, so, is what it is.

what the OPer says about the CDC rabies recommend is incorrect. what the cdc says is it is only needed for people going caving or going to be around animals as there are a few rabies cases related to animal bites. this is why people need to read the cdc recommends.

Thank you mrmoto. I did read CDC quite closely and just didn't mention that we will be going on a cave tour.

I am an administrative person for a Clinic, not a doctor or provider myself. Best not to judge someone for asking an honest question. Providers only answer medical questions about their specialty and I don't know any from Costa Rica.

The rest of the forum has been very helpful in deciding how to get around, what to pack and what to see. I'm happy there's an open place on the Internet for travelers to share!

We will only be in Manuel Antonio for a portion. I don't believe you are actually trying to be helpful, which is not what this community forum is for.

Well you don't mention in the original post you are going caving, so not sure why you think we are not being helpful, I just wanted to know where there was caves near MA, as I was not aware.

There is a huge difference between Manual Antonio, a a very pedestrian area, and Rincon.

Same could be said if you going to be deep inside La Amistad on the caribe slopes in the rainforest, then Malaria Meds may in order...get my drift...
