Hi all,

would it be possible to go to Costa Rica (San José) from Argentina (Córdoba) by bus? If so, does anyone have any idea how long this would approximately take and how much all the bus tickets would sum up to?

Oh, and what would be the best route to take? Via Bolivia or over to Chile and then up north?

Thanks in advance :)

It would be if there was a road connecting Central America (Panama) and South America (Colombia), but there is no road, there is a small no mans land of bandits, narco traffickers, rebels, military and indigenous hostile locals that will shoot first and not ask questions after.

No fear, you can circumvent the Darien Gap, with two options:

1- Time to kill, go across to Colombia via a sailboat, which is arranged in PC and takes a 4 days to cross to Turbo Colombia via San Blas Islands, choosing a good boat, a safe captain is half the trouble, the other is about $400. Allow 7-10 days when all said and done.

2- Fly from Panama City (PTY) to capitols or major cities in South America O/W, from $200 normally.

Rainy season in CA is at its peak from Sept to Nov, Costa Rica/Panama best avoided in Oct.

Most backpackers allow 3-4 months for CA region not including Mexico. For 8 countries, thats 2 weeks per country, depending on your interest, budget and route.

VIP top notch bus services connect all the capitols. [http://www.ticabus.com/ingles.html]

Technically possible, yes apart from the aforementioned Darien Gap. Are you looking at doing this as fast as possible or is it a part of a multi-month trip? If you are "just" trying to get from point to point, then you will be wise to fly at least part of the way as it will be cheaper and far faster.

If you are serious about the trip, then you'll want to look for the bus lines which do inter-country (like Ormeno and others). Argentina to Bolivia to Peru to Ecuador to Columbia to Peru. Rough guess is you are looking at about 200 hours in motion -- plus a lot of additional time in terminals, making connections. Cost -- using premium carrier ("tourist" or "executive") in their cheap seats -- my SWAG would be US$300.

haha solohobo... I was going to mention the Darien Gap, but yours is much more humorous.

The problem is not the FARC in Darien. The problem are the headhunters who are affraid of guerillas and shoot as a maniac. The FARC don't kill white people normally, just kidnap them. :)
