Can anyone recommend an off-the-beaten-path destination to access the blue hole?
BH is one of the more popular destinations in Belize, AND we are going during peak season, so we're trying to find a place to stay that doesn't land us among the throngs!

How much money do you have? You can spend $35US a night on Caye Caulker or $100's on one of the Atolls.
Hotel Miramar, Caulker. It's tolerable even in peak season. Shun Abomigrease Caye, which is intolerable regardless of season!!
For "off the beaten track" you can stay in Hopkins for $50 for beach cabanas or as little as $15 for a budget room (Toucan Trail for accommodations) and dive the Blue Hole with Hamanasi for around $300 pp. Take a look at the location of the Blue Hole on this map: http://ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/map.html and you will see that the distance to the BH from either San Pedro or Hopkins varies by less than 15 miles. You can also use the map to locate places suggested by the other posters.
