I'm new to Belize and from what I've read most people seem to be going to Caye Caulker or Placencia. I'm a retired teacher so budget is important though I don't backpack it much anymore. Good food and healthy reef is important as is a laid back, friendly bunch of locals that haven't been turned off by the tourist crush. What is the range of prices and accommodations? I know I'm probably asking the same or questions but I could use some help as I live in the sticks and don't have access to guide books right now. My wife doesn't have a spleen so we're worried about malaria on the mainland but with 2-3 weeks getting off the islands and seeing some ruinas would also be cool. Thanks for your help.
Both Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are closer to the reef than Placencia, and CC is way more laid back than AC, but AC probably has a better selection of restaurants,
It sounds like Caye Caulker might be the place for you, but with 2 to 3 weeks, why not stay on both.
For accommodation, start with the Belize Tourism Board website -- it has an accommodation listing with rates.

If you want to explore ruins, you can do a day trip from the islands (with a tour company), or base yourselves in San Ignacio for a few days.

Thanks. I'm wondering with all the folks avoiding Mexico if March could be super packed? From what I've been reading AC sounds like it's risen in popularity and price and CC is also very popular. Do you know anything about Tabacco Cay? I forgot to mention I don't like crowds. I appreciate your help.
Caye Caulker isn't exactly crowded. I would call it a pretty good mix. If you want quiet, then Tobacco Caye may be for you. It is right on the barrier reef so you can snorkel from your cabin. That said, the coral close by isn't what it used to be. Tobacco Caye is a great place for a few days if you like to read and sun yourself. It is very small and there are about 5 or 6 small hotels so there will be other people around. Other than sharing a sunset here or there, not a lot to do. Placencia isn't that crowded either. It consists of a long beach with a long sidewalk going down the middle. All except San Pedro may fit your bill.
