How available is sunscreen in Belize? I don't intend to check bags, so with the insane TSA rules, this makes bringing enough sunscreen for 10 days impossible. I've read that sunscreen is "expensive" in CA... how expensive?
It is readily available..maybe three times more? You can always bring more than one three ounce container if you have room in your little bag. I know it is a pain.
At larger stores in Belize City, expensive but generally only maybe 1 1/2 or 2 times as much as in the U.S. and sometimes even less.
I take mostly good quality bug stuff and good quality sun block in my ziplock - plenty of each for month long visits. I have learned that some are way better than others so I make my choices before I travel. I also pack a few small 1st aid type things and just shop for shampoo and lotions when I'm on the ground.
Expect that buying sunscreen in Belize will be about twice as expensive as buying it back home. Also expect that outside of Belize City and the beach areas (Caye Caulker, San Pedro, Placencia) stores are rarely well-stocked and you might not be able to find it. The alternative to buying it there is packing a whole bunch of 3oz travel size sunscreens in your carry-on, but those are very wasteful.
If I were you, I might just check a bag and bring the stuff you want. It's usually free on international airlines anyway.
I buy the sort of sunblock I want and put it into reusable bottles to reduce the waste. In our family's recent experience, most airlines charge now for checked bags on international flights (in addition to our annual or twice/year Latin America trips, one of our sons works in Africa and flies between there, US, and London several times/year. We usually fly carry-on only but on diving/flyfishing trips need to check a bag; we reduced the cost by checking in online the night before in June, though.
The Chinese grocery stores sell a brand called "No-Ad". Their 30 SPF spray, called "Pirates of the Caribbean" is $3.25US for 6 oz. They also make a 45 SPF cream in an 8.5 oz. tube, but I don't know the price.
Thanks for the info. The reason for not checking bags is not because of cost (I honestly don't care about the $25), it's because we're flying through Miami, and all the times I've checked bags and flown through there, my luggage has been lost during the layover. And since we don't know where we're staying in Belize, this is anything but ideal!

If you are not worried about the $25 checked baggage fee, I don't see why you would be worried about paying a bit more for sunscreen in Belize. Whatever the difference, it won't add up to $25.
I manage to bring all the toiletries that I need for three weeks in a quart baggie and I use a lot of sunscreen.
