Hello,
we are travelling from Europe to Cancun and stay about 3 weeks in Belize, starting end of June to end of July.
I have some questions please:

1.The main reason for this journey is the nature of Belize and I really would like to stay in the Cocksomb Basin for 2 nights. On the belizeaudubon website I read about possibilities to stay in the researchcenter , and I wrote three mails, but I didn't get information, if it is possible ore not.
Does anybody know, how to stay directly in the cocksomb sanctuary for some nights? I don't like to visit the park for just a day trip.
Is there an alternative sanctuary where we can stay over night and make some tours?

  1. The second reason to visit Belize is the Manatee!
On which places we have the best chance to see them? Do we have to book daytrips or is ist possible to do it by ourselves?

  2. It's the rainy saison, is snorkeling better on the northern islands than on the southern? We asked the IZE on South water caye, but ist is very expensive and they close on July 16. I don't know, isn't it the right saison for snorkelling in the south? We would prefere snorkeling near by the hotel and not necessary to take a boat trip. Is it better to take caye caulker? Or is there any speciall island where snorkeling is just great for about two or three days. Or is ist the best to stay some days at the end of our journey on island Holbox in Mexiko?

Many things I need to know, and I hope I'll get some advice, it hurries, we start next weeK!!!!!!!!!!!! We're looking forward so excited !! (Help! My rusty English!)
Thank's

Audubon Society is notorious for not responding to e-mails or not keeping the room reserved. It is a relatively quiet time of year, so I would say just show up and they will have something available. Worst case (which I can't imagine) is that they will be full; then just go back to Maya Center, the village where you pay the entry fee into the park, and get a room at one of the small Mayan-run lodging operations. You can have an authentic Mayan experience at the same time as visit the park. Be sure to bring EVERYTHING you will need into the park with you, including water and bug spray. There is no store in the park and any necessities they sell you will be about 4X the cost in a local store.
1 Manatees - There are manatee in the Sittee River and in the local lagoons. A couple of weeks ago there were about 15 manatee around the boat dock on the Sittee River (locally called "the marina"). You could just show up at the marina and ask about the manatee and/or rent a kayak from them and paddle the river, or book a river tour. Happy go Luckie is one operator who offer river tours.
2 Snorkeling - IZE is the cheapest property on South Water Caye. Tobacco Caye is practically next door and has cheaper lodging and more to choose from. both are right on the reef and you can walk in off the beach to snorkel. It is fine to snorkel in the south this time of year. It would not be any better from Caye Caulker and you would need to hire a boat. The reef in the south sees much less pressure from visitors and is more pristine, with brightly coloured corals.
Hopkins would b a good home base for your cockscomb stay, Sittee River and Tobacco Caye stay.
Hope you read this in time. Enjoy your stay

Dear Dean,
Thank you very much for your perfect information!! They were so concrete and very helpful!!!
Now I've booked South water Caye, it is very expensive for us, but it looks like paradise and it's just right for "The big Journey" I 've had in my mind for our family in celebration of my and my husbands 50 Birthday.for years. I hope we 'll see turtles, and colourfull fish and coralls and....
We look forward to this trip, thank you for making it a little bit easier!!
By the way, we have got six cats at home.

Greetings from Austria
