I have a trip to Belize planned next spring. I will be spending a majority of my time on the coast, but I have a few days to spend seeing some ruins. Financially, I can only afford one location. I was thinking Tikal, but it is quite a trek from Belize City.

Does anyone have any other suggestions about really great ruins sites? Or thoughts about getting from Belize City to Tikal?

Thanks!

Tikal is the best Mayan site of all ... if you're in the least bit interested, head there. It will be worth the journey.

If you're not particularly interested in Mayan ruins then save yourself the time and expense and go wherever is closest to where you're staying.

We've loved Tikal (and a dozen or so other impressive ruins in 4 countries) and still found Lamanai to be an excellent trip - lots of wildlife on the river, beautiful lagoon setting, great wildlife spotting at the ruins themselves and pyramids high enough to give you gorgeous view out over the jungle and the water. Maybe you should save Tikal until you have more time, since there are things in western Belize it's a shame to miss, too (like the ATM cave).
