Is there a ferry that goes between Puerto Cortes, Honduras and Placencia, Belize?
When does it sail?
How much does it cost?

HELP!
Any info please!

Trying to get to Placencia, Belize from Managua, Nicaragua and this ferry is a vital leg of my journey (TICA bus to San Pedro Sula, bus to Puerto Cortes, ferry to Placencia).

In my 2002 Belize book that there is a passenger ferry called Gulf Cruza that goes from Puerto Cortes to Placencia on Saturdays.

In my 2001 Central America book it says that there is a ferry called Gulf Cruz that goes from Puerto Cortes to Placencia on Wednesday and Friday at 9am.

I've seen various messages online saying different things - that it travels on Mondays, that it doesn't exist, etc.

It's been discussed many times, including just in the past week, and probably scores of times over the past year. But, sigh, the search engine here is lousy.

Yes, there is a boat (not really a ferry) between Puerto Cortes and Placencia. It is the D-Express, which is what the Gulf Cruza was renamed. It runs weekly from Puerto Cortes on Monday morning. It costs US$50.

Boats don't go if the weather is really bad.

See http://www.belizeferry.com/Welcome.html for details, but I'd suggest you call to confirm. And even then, average the information you get.

There is also a weekly boat, the Nesmyein Neydy, from Puerto Cortes to Dangriga.

The other option is to bus or take a van from Puerto Cortes to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, and then take a water taxi to Punta Gorda. There are three boats a day, US$20 to $22. From PG, bus up to Independence (James Line is the best) and take the Hokey Pokey across the lagoon to Placencia. Or fly Maya Island or Tropic Air.

Here's what I posted a week ago in reply to a similar question...

One of the water taxis changed their schedule earlier this year so it's understandable that you will still get out of date information.

Here are the schedules I obtained direct from the operators in May 2008:

  1. DANGRIGA, BELIZE TO PUERTO CORTES, HONDURAS
“Nesymein Neydy” departs from Dangriga on Saturdays. Passengers should be at the dock at 8:30 a.m. for immigration processing. The boat departs about 11:00 am.
Arrives at Puerto Cortes about 1:30 pm.
Return trip: Departs Puerto Cortes on Mondays at 9:00 a.m. Get there early for immigration processing.
Cost: US$50.00 each way (plus any exit fees)

  2. PLACENCIA, BELIZE TO PUERTO CORTES, HONDURAS
“D-Express” departs from Placencia on Fridays. Passengers should be at the dock at 8:30 a.m. There is a stop at Big Creek.
Arrives at Puerto Cortes, Honduras about 2:00 p.m.
Return trip: Departs Puerto Cortes, Honduras on Mondays at 9:00 a.m. (It actually departs a bit later but get there early for immigration processing).
    Arrive Placencia at 2 p.m.
BZ$110.00 each way (plus any exit fees).
Tickets available at the Placencia Tourism Center. Tel: 202-4506 or 523-4045. Email: placencia@btl.net
